That's a new one for me. You need to have a signed card before you play a game. Once you play - the card is used. If the player doesn't report - the card doesn't get used.
Not meaning to argue with anybody - just my opinion.
Valley should appeal tonight's loss. JMO.
I don't at all mind being wrong if that's the case - but it sure would be nice to know what the rules are - including things like loaner cards or whatever you would call them.
I had it explained to me a couple of times overnight and am no clearer on it now than I was yesterday.
I think Kevin Mitchell is a good guy and honest, so if there was a breach - he would have found it.
The Hockey Canada rule and December 1st cutback date still applies in other CJHL leagues and remains in some league constitutions (first one I looked at was the AJHL and they still have it), but it appears to have been removed from the MHL constitution.
There are also other rule changes and updates in the MHL constitution as well as updated duties for the Director of Hockey Operations and so on. I haven't had a chance to go over them in any great detail.
What appears to be the rule now is that you no longer need to have open cards at the trade deadline to bring in new players.
Us older fans remember rules like the December 1st cutback date being in place back in the day so players wouldn't be treated like a piece of meat (remember Annachiarico) who could be told that you're going to Junior B at the deadline - or you're not going to play anywhere - but things were different back then.
From how I understand it - now you get 45 cards to begin the year - and you can't have any more than 25 players carded on January 10th. It looks like Babenko was handed a ticket back to the Ukraine in the process, but that's the sort of thing that often happens when you get a top heavy league executive from any one region. Bing - bang - boom - and what works best for one franchise is suddenly implemented for all.
Sometimes, it seems like our league governors are herded in a certain direction by a select few - with no clue that things are the way they are for a reason. That's only my opinion - but how long can they keep changing the rules to allow the strong to get stronger before they clue in?
You learn something new every day in the MHL.
Thanks to those who got back to me.
