RIMOUSKI OCEANIC Danny Dupont and Joel Perrault TEAM OUTLOOK: Head Coach: Joel Perrault; GM: Danny Dupont Imports: RW Lukas Hes; RW Jan Sprynar The Oceanic had a middle of the pack team last season (32-31-3-2) and then beat the Chicoutimi Sagueneens in the 1st round of the playoffs before losing to the eventual Memorial Cup champion Quebec Remparts.
They look to have at least 18 players returning who played at least 15 QMJHL games last season including newcomers Vincent Filion and Charlie Truchon. On paper, they appear to be one of the early contenders for the division lead. They are deep at every position with the exception of in goal. They have a good mix of experience and size, but scoring goals might be a challenge. They will need to find scoring from somewhere with nobody returning who averaged at least a point per game.
Update: Le Soleil reported that Joel Perrault will be the new Oceanic head coach on July 14th.

GOALTENDERS Vincent FilionGOALTENDERS | 04 Vincent Filion | 05 Cedric Masse |
GOALTENDING: In a strange set of circumstances, the Oceanic had two 19 year-old goalies last season, and neither will return this season. Patrik Hamrla would use up both a 20 year-old spot and an import spot, and Gabriel Robert didn't have the numbers to support filling an overage role.
Update: Patrik Hamrla is showing on Elite Prospects to be playing in Finland this season.
The Oceanic hold the 32nd choice in the CHL import draft in early July. With Jan Sprynar looking to have one import spot locked up, Hamrla not returning will allow them to use that pick.
Vincent Filion has been acquired in a trade with the Moncton Wildcats and is expected to be the number 1 goalie with either Cedric Masse or William Lacelle serving as backup, barring any further roster additions.
Notes: 2005 G Olivier Brideau was acquired in a trade with Saint John on August 27th.
2007 G William Lacelle was the first goalie selected in this year's draft (2023-1-10). He put up spectacular numbers leading the QM18AAA league in GAA (1.55) and Save% (.947). He could possibly step in right away as the backup. Update: Lacelle left camp after 48 hours to keep his NCAA options open.
2005 G Lyam Leblanc got into 1 game with the Oceanic last season (0-1; 4.09 GAA; .846 Sv%).
2005 G Cedric Masse got into 3 games with the Oceanic last season (1-1; 4.09 GAA; .846 Sv%). He is projected to be the backup by a few posters on the message forums with William Lacelle going back to U18 for another season.
2003 G Gabriel Robert was not at training camp.

DEFENCE: The Oceanic return six defencemen from last season's roster and added Charlie Truchon from the Remparts. They have the upside to have one of the strongest groups of defencemen in the division with a couple of top prospects knocking on the door.
Notes: 2006 D Spencer Gill had a strong playoff season (9-1-3-4-0) matching his regular season point total and should be ready to play a much bigger role this season.
2007 D Thomas Labelle is already huge at 6'6"-192 lbs. He is the son of former Pro and notable tough-guy, Eric Labelle.
2005 D Cory MacGillivray was traded to Gatineau on August 8.
2006 D Anthony Pare got into 3 games with the Oceanic last season. He averaged a point per game in U18 and should get a long look in training camp.
2007 D Connor Sturgeon was drafted in the 3rd round (2023-3-49) and already has huge size at 6'3" and 229 lbs. He might be a tough cut for the coaches in training camp. He's very sound defensively.
2005 D Olivier Theberge was acquired in a trade with Blainville on August 27th.
2003 D Charlie Truchon was acquired in a trade with the Memorial Cup champion Quebec Remparts and should anchor the Oceanic defence this season.

FORWARDS: The Oceanic return a solid core of forwards with experience. Their overall group has a lot of depth and size.
Notes: 2003 LW Alexandre Lefebvre appears to be caught up in a numbers game with Charlie Truchon, Julien Beland and Alex Gaudio as the three probable 20 year-olds. Update: Lefebvre was not at training camp.
2004 LW Nathan Levesque was removed from the roster in early July and now appears on the Gatineau Olympiques training camp roster.
2003 LW Mikeal Denis was acquired in a trade from Blainville on August 23rd.
2003 C Alex Gaudio was traded to Val d'Or on August 23rd.
2007 C Tyson Goguen signed with the Oceanic on August 2nd. He was the 14th overall pick in this year's draft and has huge offensive upside.
2005 C Tyler Pazin is from Pierrefonds and has played US Prep hockey for the past couple of seasons, putting up huge numbers. He would be a huge add if he could be convinced to play Major Junior. He is not NCAA commited as of yet.
The Oceanic selected 2005 RW Lukas Hes from Czechia with their 1st pick of the CHL Import draft, 29th overall.
2005 RW Ben Cross has nice size and put up good numbers with Fredericton Caps U18. He plays a solid physical style and could get a long look in camp.
2007 RW Zachary Rushton was a 3rd round pick in this year's draft. He has good size and a scoring touch. He led the NBU15 league in scoring two years ago and could turn some heads in camp.

* These offseason looks at QMJHL teams will be updated as often as required leading up to training camps in August.

a - Led QM18AAA in GAA (1.55). b - Led QM18AAA in Save% (.947). "William Lacelle is an ultra-fast goalie who has excellent athleticism. Despite moving around his net with so much speed, he has shown great precision in his positioning. His puck- tracking is good, but he’s shown some difficulty in tracking it behind screens. His glove hand works well out in front of his body, while his blocker side could use a little more fine tuning. Lacelle’s reaction time is above average and should continue to place him among the best netminders of his class." - Maxime Ouellet, CSR Goaltending Specialist
William Lacelle plays for a very strong Lac St-Louis team, but even so, that 18-2 record, 1.55 GAA and .947 Save% are as impressive of goalie stats as you will find anywhere. He can stop the puck.
I didn't have him slipping into the 1st round until late in the season, but his consistency and stellar numbers couldn't keep him out. He does have his detractors and was outshone at the Canada Games by a couple of other goalies, but over the past couple of seasons, he's in a league by himself.
As I do every year, I want to point out that evaluating goaltenders and projecting where they will be in three years is the toughest of any position. Players at this age group are only beginning to hone their craft. Every other shot sees a big rebound and spectacular saves are often because a goalie is out of position. It's great to have a Goaltending Specialist to defer to for a goalie projected to go in the 1st round.

a - Named to NBU15 1st All-Star team. "Tyson Goguen is a right-handed centreman who moved south of the border to play at the prep school level for the 2022-23 season. The leading scorer for his Selects team with 65 points in 46 games, Tyson proved he was a highly skilled and creative player, capable of generating different types of scoring opportunities. A great playmaker with a a strong shot, he makes good decisions when in possession of the puck. In addition, Goguen has great puck-handling skills and is effective in the faceoff dot. All in all, he has the potential and tools to become an offensive threat at the next level." - Justin Blackmore, New Brunswick CSR Scout
Tyson Goguen is a very good skater who can carry the puck at full flight. He has a good shot and seems to know the exact right time to pull the trigger. He was the 4th highest Canadian born scorer this season in US Prep School hockey.
He is just a shade below the average height and weight for his age group and appears to be very strong and hard to knock off the puck. His stock seems to be rising.
As with most Prep School players, there is always the chance they will opt for the NCAA route. There is very little out there at the moment with regards to Tyson's future plans, but if he opts for the Q, those 63 goals in his past 84 games could easily see him climb into the 1st round. The scouts who like him really like him a lot. He's a goal scorer who plays a style similar to Justin Poirier of the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, but without Poirier's combativeness.

Anthony Pare is a big bodied defenceman whose name you see pop up on several of the various top projected lists. He's already big at 15 and very mobile for his size. He's a good skater and strong defensively. He has offensive instincts and can add depth scoring from the blueline. He has a really nice wrist shot from the point with some mustard on it that always seems to be ankle high to create a few rebounds.
A couple of descriptives that jump out are that he "likes to land a big hit," and "makes good decisions under pressure" - and that's what everybody talks about when they say good hockey sense - the gift of having your immediate reaction being the best one in pretty well every given situation.
While his stats don't jump off the page, his analytics show that he was a go-to guy for his coaches with the 3rd highest average TOI. He played both the PP and PK and also shows as winning a whopping 68% of his puck battles.
Being that big and mobile at such a young age is incredible. He's only going to get better - and probably a lot better. I think he could be a real sleeper in the draft. He's mentioned often, but seems to be just a bit under the radar. He's projected to go as early as the middle of the 2nd round by some, but I think he could jump up into the 1st round, espec- ially with the Sacha Boisvert situation.
Update: The above profile was put together a year ago leading up to the 2022 draft. Anthony returned to U18 with College Notre-Dame. Limited to only 26 games, he still finished as the league's 6th highest scoring D-man and averaged a point per game.

"Logan Roop is one of the more dynamic first year players in the Nova Scotia U18 League this year. He is a physically gifted forward, who is 6’3’’ tall and weighs 175 lbs. He is a good skater who uses his reach very well in puck protection. Logan has good hands and has shown a willingness to shoot the puck. He possesses the skills and physical tools to be a difference maker at the next level." - Taylor P. Burke, Nova Scotia CSR Scout
Logan Roop is a big winger with the Weeks Majors who has the makings of a power forward who can score. He plays a physical game and wins most of his puck battles. He has good offensive instincts and is a good puckhandler. He has a really good shot and a quick release.
The only question mark is his outside speed and quickness. He plays a similar style to Logan Crosby. He finished tied for 14th in league scoring this season and trailed only Cole Chandler and Lane Sim in points by a 15 year-old. He then had a very strong playoffs (12-7-3-10-22) as the Majors won the NSU18 championship and then the Atlantics.

The Oceanic announced a second wave of redirects on Saturday morning. Four young people saw their camp experience come to an end.
They are goalkeeper Cohen Stoddard, defender Jack Sullivan and forwards Charles Edward Roberge and William Picard. This means that 18 rookies, including William Lacelle who is showing up today with the veterans, are still at camp. They will skate for the first time with the veterans, Sunday morning, in the first of two intrasquad games, at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., played at the Sun Life Financial Coliseum.

The Océanic will start the season with 24 players An eighth defender is added to the final roster
By René Alary
We now know the final roster for the Océanic for the next season. It is made up of two goalkeepers, eight defenders and fourteen forwards.
Danny Dupont went looking for depth on the blue line this morning when he got his hands on 18-year-old defenseman Olivier Théberge of the Armada for a 10 th round pick. He played about ten games last season in Boisbriand.
“We weren't looking for a mega track. We just wanted to tweak the alignment a bit. Olivier is a young man whom I have admired for a long time. He is a more defensive defender, different from what we currently have, ”explains Dupont who said he was still very comfortable with his six veterans from last season in addition to Anthony Paré.
The general manager also got his hands on an 18-year-old goaltender in Olivier Brideau who played with the Saint John Sea Dogs. He paid for a 6th round pick and a 10th round pick . Brideau was selected in the 2nd round in 2021. He appeared in 26 games last season. Unlike Théberge, he will start the next season in Junior A, probably in Gatineau.
“Our two trusted men remain Filion and Massé. Last year, he didn't play often in Saint John and we want to give him the opportunity to see some action in Junior A, at least half a season. We loved him a lot in his draft year. But, it slipped through our hands. Today, we have the opportunity to pick it up for a very worthwhile price. Depth takes it defensively, but also in front of the net. »
Also, in a minor transaction, Nathan Lévesque, who finished last season in Rimouski, takes the direction of Gatineau in return for a 12 th round pick .
16 veterans 8 rookies Of the 24 players, 16 are veterans including newcomers Vincent Filion, Charle Truchon and Mikaël Denis. There are therefore eight recruits:
Tyson Goguen Lukas Hes Dominic Driver Anthony Pare Mathys Dube Ben Cross Olivier Theberge Cedric Masse 10 players aged 18
We note that the core of the team is formed around 18-year-old players who are 10 in number (42%). It has only four 19-year-old players.
1 player aged 16 6 players aged 17 10 players aged 18 4 players aged 19 3 players aged 20 Although the QMJHL is above all a league for 19 and 20 year olds when you want to win, the Océanic's general manager is very comfortable with his only four 19 year old players.
“We want to aspire to great honours. We're going to go and if we have any additions to make at the Holidays, we're going to make them. We are in the cycle where our team will be better than the core of the league. We are giving ourselves an opportunity to be able to win this year, ”says Dupont.
Regionals We also note that five players from Bas-Saint-Laurent broke through the line-up. “We can even say seven, because Émile Fournier and Alexis Chénard will be able to play with the Cégep de Rimouski Pioneers while practicing two to three times a week with us. We have a good agreement with Éric Plourde of the Pioneers. These are young people who need to gain some experience playing collegiate. »
