QUEBEC REMPARTS Eric Veilleux TEAM OUTLOOK: Head Coach: Eric Veilleux; GM: Simon Gagne Imports: D Bruno Julasti; D Vsevolod Komarov The Remparts are the defending Courteau Cup and Memorial Cup champions. The rebuild begins now. Even the head coach and GM need to be replaced as Patrick Roy stepped away. Simon Gagne has been named the new GM.
Update: Eric Veilleux was named the new head coach on July 6th.
The season ahead, and the rebuild itself, will largely depend on how how the group of 20 year-olds work out with no less than 13 players listed as 2003 born on their training camp roster.
There will be some guesswork here pending official roster moves, and apologies for that. If ever there was a tough roster to project, this is it.
If a player or two unexpectedly returns to the Remparts from Pro, it could set off a chain of changes to the projected season opening roster.

GOALTENDING: 2003 G William Rousseau has been traded to Rouyn-Noranda and Quentin Miller appears to be ready to step in as the number 1. The backup role is wide open with no clear frontrunner heading into training camp. Looking to add a 20 year-old or maybe a goaltender in the CHL import draft could be in the cards.
Notes: 2006 G Nathan Cadieux is a bit on the small side but put up a solid 19-3 record with Saint- Eustache U18.

DEFENCE: The Remparts show a strong returning group of defencemen, but question marks abound.
Notes: The Remparts used their 1st choice in the CHL Import draft to take 2006 D Bruno Jalasti of Finland. He put up a lot of points for a 16 year-old playing at the U18 and U20 levels.
2003 D Simon Maltais and 2004 D Antoine Michaud were both brought in with trades.
2004 Vsevolod Komarov is signed by the Buffalo Sabres. As of late July, he projects to return to the Remparts on Elite Prospects.
2004 D Mathieu Martel got into 2 games with Drummondville last season (2-0-0-0-0).
2003 D Evan Nause has been signed by the Florida Panthers and will likely play in the AHL this coming season.
2005 Leyton Stewart is the older brother of female goaltender Rhyah Stewart who got into a preseason game with the Cape Breton Eagles.

FORWARDS: The Remparts have a logjam up front with returning 20 year-olds that will either play Pro or need to be moved to begin the rebuild. The new GM has his work cut out for him.
Daniel Agostino, Charles Savoie and Mikeal Huchette are mentioned on social media as being the most likely 20 year-olds up front.
I would guess that Simon Maltais on defence, Charles Savoie and Mikeal Huchette will be the three overagers, with Daniel Agostino on the outside, but just a guess. Only the coaches can make these decisions.
Notes: 2003 LW Zachary Bolduc is signed by the St. Louis Blues and will play Pro this season.
2004 LW Lucas Canning got into 5 games last season with the Remparts (5-1-0-1-0). He has 48 games of QMJHL experience over the past two seasons with Cape Breton and the Quebec. Update: Canning was not at training camp.
2006 LW Nikolas Iafrate was added to the preseason roster on September 8th. He is the cousin of former NHL'er Al Iafrate.
2003 C Nathan Gaucher is signed by Anaheim and will play Pro this season.
2004 C Carl-Anthony Masse got into 6 games with the Remparts last season (6-0-0-0-2).
2003 C Justin Robidas is signed by Carolina and expected to play Pro this season.
2003 C Cam Thomson was not at training camp.
2005 RW Antoine Dorion was added to the training camp roster on July 17. He is the son of Ottawa Senators' GM, Pierre Dorion.
2003 RW James Malatesta is signed with Carolina and is scheduled to play with Cleveland of the AHL this season.

IN THE SYSTEM - QUEBEC REMPARTS Drafted QMJHL: Quebec (2023-2-25) Me 18 CSR 36 HP 31

"Nathan is a forward with a very good skating stride and quick hands. He has been a great offensive presence for the Riverains this year, finishing second on the team with 15 goals and 32 points in 41 games. With a lot of offensive qualities, Quinn is a player to watch ahead of the next QMJHL Entry Draft. However, he will have to improve his defensive involvement if he wants to become a more complete player at the next level." - Frederic Levesque, CSR Scout
Nathan Quinn is another in the small, speedy mold who creates a lot of scoring chances and has a knack for scoring goals. He's very quick on the forecheck and scores a lot of goals with a quick release from out of nowhere. Despite his smaller size, he likes to go to the front of the net and doesn't shy away from traffic. He reminds me a bit of Vincent Labelle of the Moncton Wildcats.
While he can produce points, the knock on him seems to be with consistency and needing to become bigger and stronger and to add a physical element to his game. On the positive side, he continues to produce at each successive level. I would guess a team already has him on their radar in the 1st round.

Drafted QMJHL: Quebec (2023-3-53) Me 97 CSR 34 HP 59
2007 NATHAN WRIGHT, Coll. Esther-Blondin 5'11" - 165 lbs. "Nathan is a mobile defender who has the perfect physique for the job. He is very effective in one-on-one battles as he likes to play rough with his opponents. He’s shown a lot of character and is very difficult to play against. Lately, his coach has been giving him more and more responsibilities. He is being used on the power play because he has a good shot from the point that hits the target with regularity. He has made great progress through- out the season, and it will be interesting to follow his development in the playoffs." - Daniel Noonan, CSR Scout
Nathan Wright is a better than average skater and has good size. He's very mobile but will need to work on his positioning and foot speed. That should happen as he gains more experience and confidence. He's very highly ranked by the CSR scouts and it looks like I'm just not seeing what everybody else does.
|
Drafted QMJHL: Quebec (2023-4-73) Me 77 CSR C HP 58
2007 RAPHAEL MESSIER, Magog Cantonniers 5'9" - 150 lbs. Raphael Messier put up good numbers for a rookie on a perennially strong Magog team this season. He's an above average skater but not overly fast. He likes to set up at the half wall and look to make plays. The knock on him is that he can be a perimeter player and will need to add some physicality to play in the Q. I think he might be a bit under the radar. I think a lot of players take more time to adjust to the next level. Another season in U18 will likely do wonders.

92. Drafted QMJHL: Quebec (2023-5-78) Me 92 CSR 87 HP 83
2007 FRANCIS SAMUEL PETIGNY, Laval-Montreal Rousseau U17 6'0" - 140 lbs. "A dynamic defenseman with a very good skating stride, Petigny is effective in transition because of his passing skills and very good vision. This allows him to support the offense well. In his defensive zone, he works very well with his stick to cut off passing lines. A good competitor, he is very efficient at retrieving loose pucks. If there is one element of his game that can be criticized, it is that he needs to trust his shot more. Francis- Samuel participated in the QMJHL Cup in Saguenay and stood out in his age group." - Daniel Noonan, CSR Scout
Francis Samuel Petigny is a very good skater with a lot of mobility. He's tall and rangy but has a very light frame. He's shown some offensive upside at the U17 level, but he will need to get stronger to take it to the next level. He's a tough call as far as projecting how he will do in the Q. Next year will answer a lot of questions. A gut feeling seems to tell me that he could go as high as the 4th round.
