BLAINVILLE-BOISBRIAND ARMADA Mathieu Turcotte TEAM OUTLOOK: Head Coach: Mathieu Turcotte; GM: Olivier Picard Imports: D Samuel Kupec; LW Kristers Ansons The Armada (22-37-6-3) finished 7th in their conference standings and 16th of 18 teams in the league. They lost in the 1st round to the powerful Sherbrooke Phoenix in 4 games.
They have some decisions to make with their 20 year-olds imports as far as using their picks in the CHL import draft. They hold the 8th and 68th picks overall. Trading one, or both of their returning imports is probable.
Update: D Max Struele will not be back this season. The Armada selected 2006 D Samuel Kupec and 2006 LW Kristers Ansons in the CHL Import draft.
The Armada appear to be ready to take the next step up the ladder. They have a very elite group of kids in Mateo Nobert, Xavier Villeneuve, Zachary Morin and Zach Wheeler if all end up playing with them down the road.

GOALTENDING: Both Armada goaltenders from last season are eligible to return, but Nicholas Sheehan is unlikely to be back and use up a 20 year-old spot with Charles-Edward Gravel the incumbent number 1.
Notes: Update: 2004 G Edouard Gauthier was acquired from Victoriaville on August 27th.
2006 G Anthony Savoie didn't put up great numbers, but he seems to most fit the bill as backup to Gravel.

DEFENCE: The Armada are young on defence, but they have five returnees who played 40 games or more. 2003 Felix Larose should be the anchor.
Notes: 2005 D Olivier Beaulieu is NCAA commited to Clarkson for the 2024-25 season.
2006 D Alex Carbonneau was acquired in a trade from Cape Breton on August 24th.
2004 D Emanuelson Charbonneau is NCAA commited to Nebraska-Omaha for the coming season.

2006 D Eric Halliday got into 1 game with the Armada last season (1-0-0-0-0).
2006 D Samuel Kupec was drafted 8th overall in the CHL Import draft in July. Update: Kupec was having difficulty gaining his release from his club team and hopes to receive clearance to play with the Armada before the regular season begins.
2003 D Maximilian Struele is playing with HC Fribourg this coming season (Elite Prospects).
2005 D Olivier Theberge got into 9 games with the Armada last season (9-0-0-0-2). Update: Theberge was traded to Rimouski on August 27th.

FORWARDS: The Armada are a bit thin up front, but that's how you build is by going with the kids. A lot will depend on how the import situation plays out. It might be better to retain one and trade one.
Notes: 2006 LW Kristers Ansons was the Armada's 2nd pick in the CHL Import draft this season. He is the younger brother of Raivis Ansons.
2003 LW Mikeal Denis was traded to Rimouski on August 23rd.
2004 LW Colby Huggan got into 25 games with the Armada (25-3-4-7-6) before finishing the season in Amherst. Update: Hugggan was traded to Acadie-Bathurst on August 27th.
2004 LW Ivan Miroshnichenko is signed with the Washington Capitals and split last season in the KHL / MHL.
2007 LW Zachary Morin has commited to the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL for next season. The Armada took a flyer on him with the 19th pick of the 1st round and it will be interesting to see how it plays out down the road. Morin had some support as being the best player in the draft. Update: Morin was not at training camp.
2006 LW Eliot Ogonowski got into a game with Gatineau last season and 7 games with the Armada (8-0-0-0-2).
2005 C Lou-Olivier Charland got into 3 games with the Armada last season (3-0-0-0-0).

IN THE SYSTEM - BLAINEVILLE-BOISBRIAND ARMADA Drafted QMJHL: Blainville-Boisbriand (2023-1-3) Me 14 CSR 4 HP 5
2007 MATEO NOBERT, Lac Saint-Louis Lions 5'10" - 140 lbs. Centre: Shoots LSEASON | TEAM / LEAGUE | GP | G | A | PTS. | PIM | 2021-22 | Lac Saint-Louis QM15AAA | 29 | 20 | 21 | 41 | 22 | 2021-22 | Lac Saint-Louis QM17E | 8 | 3 | 1 | 4 | 0 | 2022-23 | Lac Saint-Louis QM18AAA | 42 | 20 | 24 | 44 | 4 |
"Mateo Nobert combines many of the top assets that are looked for in a forward. As a centerman, he has shown great maturity in his play. He excels in his reading of the game thanks to his high hockey sense. He also cuts up the ice well and breaks up a lot of plays, both in the defensive and neutral zones. He easily gets the offense going and creates opportunities for his linemates, which explains his presence among the top scorers in his league. His impeccable work ethic and his very high potential make him a top prospect." - Benoit Payment, CSR scout
Mateo Nobert is a bit on the light side at 5'10" and 140 lbs. He has good speed and knows how to move the puck around with quick passes on the tape. He has been a goal scorer and point producer at every level and finished with an impressive 44 points in 42 games as a 15 year-old this season.
The only knock on him is that he doesn't go to the front of the net and he will need to get bigger and stronger at the major junior level. His upside is huge if he puts on a bit of muscle.

Drafted QMJHL: Blainville-Boisbriand (2023-1-7) Me 45 CSR 12 HP 9
2007 XAVIER VILLENEUVE, Pittsburgh Penguins Elite U15 5'9" - 140 lbs. Defence: Shoots LSEASON | TEAM / LEAGUE | GP | G | A | PTS. | PIM | 2021-22 | Lac Saint-Louis QM15AAA | 27 | 4 | 19 | 23 | 11 | 2021-22 | Lac Saint-Louis QM17E | 5 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2022-23 | Pittsburgh Penguins NE PACK 15U | 57 | 6 | 19 | 25 | 10 |
Xavier Villeneuve might be the best technical skater in the entire 2007 draft class. His hockey IQ is also on the high end. He loves to lead the rush in a style that resembles Jordan Tourigny. He is currently listed ay 5'9" and 140 lbs., so he will need to get a bit bigger and stronger if he opts for major junior. He plays for the same Pittsburgh Penguins U15 team that Owen Philips played for last year. I don't use the word "edgework" very often, but with him, its the first thing that you notice.
His older brother, Charles-Olivier, plays for Shawinigan and is listed at 5'11" and 152 lbs. this season, so if Xavier can get that big in the next year or two, his chances to project into a top pair D-man in major junior will go up considerably. With his high-end skating and skills, a team might be looking to draft him much higher. As with most US Prep school players, the NCAA question mark is there.
If Xavier opts to play in the Q, he could jump up as high as the 1st round. He could be this year's Owen Phillips / Marcus Kearsey type. He's a wow skater.
Update: Xavier led all defencemen in scoring at the final leg of the QMJHL Cup.

"Zachary is a power forward that plays with a mean streak, every team will hate to play against him. He makes plays with his feet, his frame, and can play in all situations. He is beloved by his teammates and is extremely popular in the locker room." - Brian Jardine, Little Caesars head coach
"Zachary is a power forward who is a left-hand shooter. After playing at the U18 AAA level with Collège Esther-Blondin in 2021-2022 at the age of 14, Zachary has moved south of the border where he put up impressive numbers this season. At 6’2″ and 174 lbs, he already has an imposing frame that he puts to good use. He has a heavy, powerful and accurate shot as well as a very good skating stride overall. He plays a physical style and doesn’t hesitate to rush the opposing net or to complete each of his checks. In short, he has all the tools to become an impact player at the next level." - Pierre Cholette, CSR Director of Scouting
Zachary Morin already has good size at 6'1"-175 lbs. He has exceptional speed and can carry the puck at full throttle. He likes to go to the net and seems to enjoy the physical side. He has a good shot and a quick release.
Zachary led the QBAAA league in goals (32) during the 2019-20 season, and his 47 points put him in 2nd place, 4 points behind Thomas Desruisseaux (51) who was a year older.
He sat out the 2021-22 season due the Covid pandemic, before joining College Ester-Blondin for his 14 year-old season. Teammates there included 2022 1st rounders Tomas Lavoie (1st) and Adam Fortier-Gendron (14th).
He finished 12th in US15AAA Prep School hockey this season with 94 points, despite playing 20 fewer games than most of those ahead of him due to a lighter schedule.
Zachary's father, Nathan, played 169 QMJHL games in the early 1990's and would go on to play in the AHL for a short time with the Fredericton Canadiens.
Note: Zachary Morin has committed to play with the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL next season. It really throws a wrench into the list of projected 1st round prospects towards this year's draft. At one point earlier in the season, some scouts had him neck and neck with Caleb Desnoyers as far as who would go 1st overall.
A recent rumour claimed that Zachary broke his leg, but I can't substantiate that. I thought it was important enough to mention.

Drafted QMJHL: Blainville-Boisbriand (2022-2-30) Me 96 CSR 29
2006 VINCENT DESJARDINS, Saint-Eustache U18 5'10" - 146 lbs. Centre: Shoots RSEASON | TEAM / LEAGUE | GP | G | A | PTS. | PIM | 2019-20 | Nord Selects QBAAA | 23 | 8 | 4 | 12 | 22 | 2020-21 | Nord Selects | - | - | - | - | - | 2021-22 | Saint-Eustache Vikings QM18AAA | 40 | 9 | 18 | 27 | 8 | 2021-22 | Team Red QMJHL Cup | 4 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 2022-23 | Saint-Eustache Vikings QM18AAA | 39 | 15 | 32 | 47 | 38 |
Vincent Desjardins is the twin brother of defenceman Etienne Desjardins and both played with the Vikings this season. Vincent is a centre who also plays on the right side. Etienne is 20 lbs. heavier and is ranked 44th here on the list.
He won 51% of his 219 faceoffs and a solid 49% of his puck battles for being a bit on the light side at 146 lbs. He isn't feisty, but he doesn't shy away from traffic.
He's a bit better than average skater and can pull away if he gets in behind an opponent's defence, but for the most part, he looks to set up in either circle and look to pass. He can make a nifty pass on occasion and thread the puck ahead and put it on the tape. He has a good shot when he gets a chance or runs out of passing options, and he put 65% of his shot attempts on goal.
Vincent and Etienne both played for Team Red at the Quebec Cup. Vincent put up 3 assists in 4 games.
Update: The above profile was put together a year ago leading up to the 2022 QMJHL draft. Vincent returned to U18 with Saint-Eustache and finished 3rd in assists (32) and 8th in points (47) in the league. He got into 14 games with the Armada and showed very well (14-4-3-7-6).

a - Led league in assists (39). b - Led league in points (60). c - Named Playmaker of the Year. d - Named to 1st All-Star team. "It goes without saying that Zachary Wheeler had a great regular season after leading the NBPEIMU18HL in both assists (39) and points (60) in just 34 games. The skilled forward has great playmaking skills and a great vision of the game. In addition, he’s able to effectively position himself in the offensive zone to produce high danger scoring opportunities for he and his teammates. His high IQ and active stick also make him reliable in the defensive zone. Thanks to a strong two-way game, he is quick to jump on loose pucks or to steal them from opposing players." - Justin Blackmore, New Brunswick CSR Scout
"The young highly skilled winger thinks the game extremely well. He’s a strong skater and possesses a great deceptive release. He has solid puck skills in traffic and isn’t shy to go to the dirty areas of the ice to create offence for himself and his line mates." - Craig Eagles, FDS Podcast
Zachary Wheeler was one of the few players to be given exceptional status to play as a 14 year-old in the NBPEIMU18HL. Already 6' tall at 14, he tied for 6th in league scoring and then led the Flyers in playoff scoring as they won the league title. The Flyers would go on to win the Atlantic U18 title and then became only the second Atlantic team to win the Telus Cup as national champions.
Now 6'1" and 165 lbs. at 15, he led the NBPEIU18 league in scoring playing against players up to two years older. He uses his size advantage, reach and strength to go to the net and get a stick on loose pucks.
Zach took a bit of criticism at the Canada Games and the Atlantic Cup for not dominating, but with 8 points in 7 games at the Telus Cup last year, he showed that he can be a big game player against top competition. He will need to get a bit stronger and more physical to star in the QMJHL, but he has all of the tools.
