Bombshell out of the NSJHL as the Scotians get hit hard with sanctions.
“ NSJHL Statement regarding the Pictou County Scotians -
The league recently conducted a thorough investigation into allegations regarding the Pictou County Scotians' participation in games with an illegal roster. The investigation unearthed evidence suggesting that the Scotians had, in fact, listed an ineligible player on their scoresheet during a total of eleven games.
Adhering to the regulations set forth by Hockey Canada and Hockey Nova Scotia, the league has taken strict measures in response to this violation. Consequently, the points earned by the Pictou County Scotians in the aforementioned games have been nullified. These games are officially recognized as forfeits, with opposing teams awarded Two (2) points per game.
In addition, the head coach of the Pictou County team will serve a five-game suspension in light of this breach.
The league will not provide further comments on this matter as the investigation has been concluded.”
Scotians were sitting at 2nd in the division at 14-7 so that is going to be very costly. 11 games with an illegal player is ridiculous, that can’t happen.

There seems to be a few problems out of the ordinary for the league this season - especially with the way they handled the Cumberland Blues' situation - overturning wins that did not fit the regulations as set out by Hockey Canada where the only way a win can be reversed is through the use of an ineligible player. Then they marked the entire Blues' schedule as forfeits enabling 9 of the 11 league teams to show winning records at the time (from what I remember). The league needs new leadership. I don't mean that people (volunteers) aren't trying - but more that they don't seem to understand how things work - or are supposed to work. The league constitution calls for players to get clearance from HNS before they play a single game. Whoever is serving as the Scotians' active GM should be gone for a full calendar year - no exceptions.

Hearing that the player has played on the team for the last 3 seasons and is not an overaged player. Something to do with a technical issue regarding protected lists I guess.
Having said that, why did it take 11 games for this to be noticed? The league executives and people responsible for overseeing this are paid, it should have been addressed after the first game. IMO - with it being an 11 game stretch, I’d guess that the team was unaware of the issue.

IMO - with it being an 11 game stretch, I’d guess that the team was unaware of the issue. Guessing it will all come out eventually - and once the player in question is pinpointed - figuring out how he was deemed ineligible should be fairly easy. What usually happens is that an opponent figures out that a player isn't eligible and appeals a loss (nobody rats on themselves). As such, if an opposing team can figure it out (player ineligibility) - surely a team's own staff should know all the more. I could be wrong - but to be a GM at the Junior B level or higher - you can't just choose to not do your homework. IMO - the blame is very likely 100 percent with the team. The constitution seems very clear on that the last time I looked where it specified that it is up to the teams to ensure player eligibility - not the league. Even with a suspension - it's on the team to ensure a player serves his suspension and does not play. How can you have a valid signed card if a player is ineligible? You can't just say - "Oh - I thought we had clearance" - or "somebody from HNS told me on the phone it should be OK to play him until we get official clearance and just a formality." You can't play an ineligible player - period. Not meaning to be disrespectful or disagree with anything you are saying. By the way - thanks for posting about the NSJHL. I read every single post about the league and try to keep informed of what's going on - who's doing well and so on.

I read every single post about the league and try to keep informed of what's going on - who's doing well and so on. No worries about the disrespect, there was none. Life’s more enjoyable when we quit taking things personal, lol. I’m not 100% on all the constitutional rights and obligations and whatnot within the league so my apologies there. At the end of the day, we don’t know the exact situation and all the details so all we can do is speculate at this point. I agree with you in that the team’s management should have been more aware of what was going on as it would have prevented the headache. All is not lost for the team, they still have 11 games remaining and can make it back into a playoff position. An uphill climb, for sure, but not an impossible one. It’ll be interesting to see if they end up finishing 4th which would match them likely with the Bulldogs which would be a great series to watch.
