LEAGUE HISTORY - 1978 - 2000 From the NSAAAMHL Website: Celebrating Over 20 Years of Excellence 1978-2000
Entering our 23rd year of operation the Nova Scotia AAA Midget Hockey League has much to celebrate and be proud of. League graduates continue to make their mark on the NHL scene, none more so than high scoring St. Louis Blues defenseman Al MacInnis of Port Hood. Joining MacInnis in the big time are Washington Capitals netminder and former Dartmouth resident Olaf Kolzig, Los Angeles Kings forward Glen Murray of Bridgewater, Buffalo’s Eric Boulton of Halifax, and Colin White of New Glasgow who won a Stanley Cup last year with New Jersey. Other Nova Scotians who see duty in the NHL are Jon Sim, Dallas Stars, Donald MacLean, Toronto, Craig Hillier, Pittsburgh, and Norm Batherson, Dean Melanson, Craig Ferguson, as well as Cam Russell, have all either played in the NHL or are only recently removed from it.
Still more locals are earning a living scoring goals and blocking shots in the lower minors and in Europe. Allan MacIsaac of Antigonish has even risen to the rank of general manager with the East Coast League's Hampton Road Admirals. But our league’s impact extends far beyond the pro ranks. Two-time AAA Midget league scoring champion Robbie Sinclair was named captain of the NCAA Division 1 Princeton Tigers as was Cole Harbour’s Evan Cheverie at U of Miami at Ohio. Former Harvard University star Craig MacDonald of Antigonish played for Canada's national team and has also had some playing time in the NHL.
Closer to home, Atlantic Universities Hockey Conference and Maritime Junior A Hockey League rosters are littered with players who spent valuable time developing at the AAA midget level. And more league graduates than ever before are being drafted by the Quebec Major Junior teams, in particular those based in Halifax, Cape Breton, Moncton , and Bathurst. It's the kind of success story organizers could only dream about when the Maritime AAA Midget Hockey League, the Nova Scotia league's predecessor, became a reality in the fall of 1978.
At that time membership consisted of franchises from Cape Breton, Nova (Antigonish-Port Hawkesbury), Halifax, Dartmouth, Valley, and Moncton. Almost immediately, the league champions began to make their presence felt in the Air Canada Cup national championship with the Halifax McDonald's finishing a solid fourth out of 10 teams in 1980 and the Nova Midgets winning a bronze medal in Halifax a year later.
By 1983, Moncton and Saint John, which had joined in 1979, had departed to form a New Brunswick AAA Midget League, allowing the Maritime circuit to operate for one more season before evolving into the Nova Scotia AAA Midget Hockey League.
Expansion to Pictou County, South Shore, and Sackville in the mid-80s increased membership to eight teams and though there has been a couple of franchise shifts (Sackville to Cole Harbour and Nova to Cape Breton West) in the 1990s that number has remained constant.
In the 1997-98, the NSAAAMHL increased its regular season from 28 to 35 games. In addition, all teams will, as usual, compete in tournaments throughout the Maritimes, Quebec, and Ontario. This exposure, combined with quality coaching and a high standard of play, makes the league an attractive package for virtually every top-notch player in the province who has aspirations of advancing to the next level.
Yes, AAA midget hockey in Nova Scotia has built a solid foundation through the past two decades. With continued excitement, enthusiasm, and commitment toward excellence and player development, the league's future looks to be even brighter.

Hosein Earns Spot in Record Books 2016-02-10
Aidan Hosein On their 34 game, of the Steel Subaru 2015-16 regular season, Aidan Hosein recorded his 7 shutout. This shutout gave him the record for the most shutouts in regular season play. The record replaces the record held by Justin Ritcey in the 2012-13 season. Biography - Aidan Hosein Aidan joined the Steele Subaru Major Midgets this year after moving to Halifax from Oakville, Ontario. While there he played senior varsity hockey for Oakville Trafalgar High School. Aidan, at sixteen years of age, is currently in grade eleven at Halifax Grammar School and hopes to play for an NCAA university in the future. A fan of Carey Price, Aidan has focused on improving his reading of the play
this season and his now NSEMMHL league record of 7 shut outs in regular season play would indicate his growth in this area. In the off season, Aidan enjoys playing lacrosse and is a music aficionado. “Hosey” is a popular member of our team but certainly leads his teammates
in superstitious behaviour. Aidan’s game day routine with his aversion to floor lines and cracks is becoming famous!

FROM HOCKEYSCENE: GOALTENDER BREAKS 18-YEAR OLD RECORD HALIFAX, NS - January 21, 2010
Jake Brennan
When Jake Brennan of the Halifax Titans started in net Tuesday night against the
Cape Breton West Islanders, he didn’t stop to think he had a chance to set a new record in Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey, all he knew was he wanted to help his team win.
Well, he got the win, a shutout win, and with that win he set a new record, five shut- outs in one regular season of play. "It was a good thing to get," he said about the record, "Shutouts are hard to get but the team helped me. They played just as hard as ever, even though we were up 6-0 and the coaches told them to keep the pressure on so I guess we all had a shutout." The previous record of four shutouts was set in 1982 by Cape Breton Tradesmen’s Philip David and was tied 10 years later by Trent Cavicchi, of the Dartmouth Subways. Now, 18 years later, 15 year old, rookie, Jake Brennan, has set a new record for others to strive to break. And it didn’t come easily, he was called on to make 35 saves to get it.
In an interview later, he said he has been a goaltender since his first year of atom. "I always wanted to be one, I just thought from the first time I was with a team, I want to be the goaltender and I got the chance and have been playing in net ever since."
The 6’0, 160 pound rookie has taken to his first year in major midget with ease and is looking forward to his time with the Titans. "I guess when I’m finished here I’d like to move on to the next level. Right now I’m just happy to be where I am. It’s a great team and great coaches," he said.
Asked what he liked most about being a goaltender, the grade 10 student at Halifax Grammar School said, "I think it’s because you control the game. The pressure is on you to stop the puck, keep the other team from scoring."
"You know sometimes things go wrong up the ice and someone comes in and can score a goal that could be the winner and it’s up to you to stop them. It’s up to you to try to win the game," he said. "I mean everyone has to play their very best but some- times it’s all up to you. You’re the last person who can stop them, I guess that’s what I like the most about goaltending."
"But I have to say it takes everyone working real hard, all game, and the coaches to be there to remind us what we have to do to win. I really have to thank everyone. A goaltender can’t set the record without the help of the whole team and we have a great team," he said.
The Hammond Plains native currently has a GAA (goals against average) of 1.94 in 15 games and it just could be he’ll add a few more shuouts to his resume in the months and years ahead.

1981-82 CAPE BRETON COLONELS 82 Colonels to be inducted into Sport Hall of Fame Published on February 18, 2010 SYDNEY - The 1981-82 edition of the Cape Breton Colonels may have been a mix of
talent from different local minor hockey associations, but together, they jelled both on and off the ice to put together a memorable season.
The Colonels, who won the Maritime Midget 'AAA' Hockey League championship and took home a bronze medal from the Air Canada Cup national midget hockey champ- ionship that season, will be inducted under the team category into the Cape Breton Sport Hall of Fame at a ceremony May 30 at Centre 200, to be held in conjunction with the Cape Breton Sport Heritage Awards.
"We had a great group of guys and everybody's done well since then and we've always kept in touch, so it's one of those things we're all proud of." The Colonels finished second in the regular-season standings that year behind the
Dartmouth Forbes Chevies. Both teams met in the league final, with the winner to advance to the Air Canada Cup being held in Victoria, B.C.
Cape Breton upset Dartmouth in their best-of-five series, 3-1, winning the final game in the Chevies' own barn. One motivator for the Colonels, said MacKeigan, was that the Dartmouth team had their hotel rooms in Victoria already booked.
The Colonels were led offensively that season by forward Fabian Joseph, who set league records for goals (53) and points (97) in a season.
In goal, Phil David set a record with four shutouts in a season, a mark that was equalled by Trent Cavicchi of Dartmouth a decade later.
Their 1982 league championship victory was the first for the Colonels, who wouldn't win the title again until 1991.
"You're only as good as the guys around you," said Joseph. "I was fortunate enough to play with some great players and Jack was a big part of that.
"It's one of those things that the older you get, the more you appreciate it."
The Colonels, under head coach and former NHLer Paul (Jigger) Andrea, assistant coach Jackie MacKeigan Sr. and supported by manager Rod McCarron and equipment manager Teddy Gouthro, faced stiff competition at the national midget tournament.
Entries included the eventual champion Burnaby Winter Club Travelers led by future NHLer Cliff Ronning, the Notre Dame Hounds of Saskatchewan, boasting the likes of Wendel Clarke, Gary Leeman and Russ Courtnall, and the Ste. Foy Gouverneurs that starred Patrick Roy in goal.
Cape Breton had a real wake-up call in the opening game, getting drubbed by Roy's Ste. Foy team by a 10-1 score.
"I remember we got there the night before and we didn't play until the next night until late and by the time we finished the game, it was 2 a.m. our time," said Andrea.
"The kids just weren't in the game, their heads weren't there and their legs weren't there. I told them after the game to treat this game like a practice.
"We're much better than this, so don't even worry about it. Go, have a good sleep and we'll get back at it tomorrow.
"The next night, we beat Notre Dame 3-2. The kids really played well. If we had got to the final, Fabian would have been most valuable player of that tournament."
The Colonels eventually played in the bronze medal game against the South Ottawa Warriors.
Both teams battled to double overtime and because the championship game between Burnaby and Ste. Foy was being televised, the Cape Breton-South Ottawa tilt ended in a draw. As a result, both teams were awarded the bronze medal.
"It was a very well balanced club and everybody bought in," said Andrea. "They worked hard from the first to third line.
"Actually, I never really had lines. My motto was that if you're good enough to make the team, you're good enough to play. "Not everybody played the power play, but certainly everybody played when it was
their turn to play and that's just the way it was.
"I told the kids from the start that this is probably the best hockey you'll ever play, so enjoy it, play your best, don't worry about losing because we're going to win, all you had to do is work hard."

DONNIE AB MACISAAC The Daily News (Halifax) Sports, Friday, November 30, 1990 Coach a local rink legend Midget giant MacIsaac described as being 'tough as nails' By Carl Fleming
Longtime friends call him 'Don A.B.' and describe him as a pillar in the community. Rival coaches say he's 'tough as nails' and warn that he's 'a guy you don't mess with.'
The latter comment, perhaps, lends some credence to one of the most memorable old war stories originating from the Antigonish Memorial Arena.
Although the details are sketchy, the highlights had Don A.B. charging into the second tier of seats, gear and all, and not stopping until some heckling fans were cowering somewhere in the parking lot.
Outwardly at least, Don MacIsaac, 51, may have mellowed somewhat since his rock 'em-sock 'em senior hockey playing days of a generation ago.
But the passion Don A.B. (the initials stand for Angus Bernard, his father) holds for his favorite sport remains as strong as ever. Who else is there with a minor coaching resume spanning 32 years and counting?
"Don has given his heart and soul to minor hockey," says Cape Breton Capers coach Francis (Chebot) Cormier, a longtime friend. "There's no end to the energy he's had for the game. At the same time he's been very dedicated to his wife (Murdo) and family (seven children). He's made a large contribution to the area."
For the past 12 seasons, MacIsaac has served as GM / coach / trainer /vice president / fund raiser / taxi driver and more for the Nova Midgets - charter members of the Maritime AAA Midget League and its successor, the Nova Scotia AAA Midget League.
And his track record -- three trips to the national championships, one national bronze medal, an undefeated tour of Sweden, over 25 players drafted by major junior teams, at least three players (son Allan, Al MacInnis and John Bekkers) drafted by NHL teams, and 12 consecutive playoff appearances -- guarantees instant respect for every Novas squad even before it takes to the ice.
"The Novas play a certain way," says Halifax McDonald's coach Rusty James. "They're physical. Tough. They dump the puck in and they play hard for 60 minutes."
In other words, they are a mirror image of their coach.
Since he has been around the AAA midget circuit since Day 1, MacIsaac knows better than most the effect it has had on the provincial amateur hockey scene.
"At the outset (back in 1978-79), we figured the time had come to get all the best kids in the Maritimes together in one league," said the Scott Maritimes' employee. "Now, all you have to do is look where the kids in the university and junior leagues are coming from.
"This league seems to be a stepping stone. It has created a vacuum for high achievers, kids who have dreams of moving on."
The NSMHL's reputation for a high standard of play didn't come overnight, however.
"Any league is only as good as the people running it," said MacIsaac, an imposing figure at six-foot-four. "In our case, we've had people like Dave Driscoll, R. B. Kimball and Wayne MacPherson running things over the years. They like to do things right and the spin-off (for the teams and players) is great."
Although he devotes an estimated 50 hours per week (not to mention spending a sizable amount of his own money over the years) to the Novas, there is no mistaking why MacIsaac has never grown tired of the wear and tear.
"The bottom line is that the midgets are genuine," he said. "They may not have all the skills but in most cases they'll give you 105 per cent. We've even got players who travel 160 miles (round-trip) to practice."
Coaching his own boys (Allan, Blaire and Ian, not to mention at least six nephews over the years) has provided a special challenge.
"It makes for a very tough situation when there is family involved," said the former president of Antigonish minor hockey. "It's easier if your kids are fairly good, but if they aren't, it's awkward."
Rest assured that the MacIsaac boys could more than hold their own but their dad concedes he was 'maybe too tough' on them, nonetheless.
Although Don A.B. talks about hanging up his coach's hat "if somebody came along who would do it...", one suspects he'll stick around at least until youngest son Colin (a six- foot-plus bantam-aged defenceman) makes the grade.
In the meantime, he's got another edition of the Novas to run and, as usual, it is among the league's upper echelon with a fourth-place 7-5-2 record entering a weekend double- header against the Valley Wildcats.
"We've got something -- big hearts and really dedicated type guys -- we didn't have as much of last year," said MacIsaac. "Our penalty killing and power play units are built from each line.
"Sometimes it hurts during the regular season, but it helps in the end because you're not depending on two or three guys in the playoffs."
It's a tried-and-true theory. Don A.B. has been around long enough to know.

Most of the information in these record books can't be found elsewhere.
The early years are very hard to find information from.
If anybody can help out with the missing information (player stats, trophy winners and All-Star info) from the first couple of seasons, it would be very much appreciated.
It's one of those things where it's hard to rest until you fill in the missing pieces.
If you can help out - please let me know at : justpuckinaround@hotmail.com

The following franchise capsules are meant as a way to provide a quick overview of their accomplishments over the years, as well as to include a few items of interest.
Pictures, images and newspaper clippings always add a bit of colour and grab the reader's attention. If you have anything of interest, we'd love to be able to add it here.

History of the Cape Breton West IslandersThe Cape Breton West area has been host to a Major Midget Hockey Team since the 1995-96 hockey season and its franchises have a long and storied history. A group of hockey men from the “West” area, namely John Carl Gillies and Alex Chooch MacDonald from Port Hood, Ross Ingraham from Margaree, Arnold Dithurbide from Cheticamp, Martin Bernard from Whycocomagh just to name a few, got together and applied to the NSMMHL for a franchise to replace the “Nova Midgets” which had taken a leave of absence. The team was called “Rods’ One-Stop Eagles” after its original sponsor, Rod Goo-Goo who owned Rod’s One Stop in Whycocomagh. The team practiced out of the old Whycocomagh Arena but played their home games at six different arenas in the West coverage area. Neil MacDonald from Cheticamp was the initial coach. The most prominent player from this era was Aaron Johnson. Prior to the 2001-2002 season, the franchise went up for bids and moved to the Baddeck Arena, where they were re-named the Inverary Islanders. Scott MacAulay the owner of the Inverary Inn was the team sponsor. The most notable player during that time frame was Judigue native Andrew MacDonald. In May of 2005, the team was put up for bids again and the Al MacInnis Sports Center under Manager Joe Morris and Arena President Brian MacInnis were awarded the franchise and named the Cape Breton West Islanders. During their initial season led by Team President Lester Cambell and Head Coach Craig MacInnis, the Islanders finished first in league play, including recording an undefeated 25 game streak which is still in the record books. They lost a vicious 7 game series in the League Finals to the Dartmouth Subways. The team was led that year by Team Captain Kyle Duke MacDonald and featured the high scoring line of Nick MacNeil, Adam Laite and Willie Harvey. Murdock MacLellan a top forward anchored the Power Play and was a premier Penalty killer. Since that initial season the Islanders have had three other head Coaches, Brian MacInnis, Nick Muise and Sean Donovan. They also have had many Team Captains – 2005-06 Kyle “Duke” MacDonald 06/07 Graham Decoste, 07/08 Marco Deveaux,08/09 Kendall MacInnis, 09/10 Dale MacIntosh, 10/12 Brandon MacKinnon, 12/13 Regan Spears and from 2013-15 Alex Bonaparte. The 2015-16 season will be the 11th season for the Islanders playing at the Al MacInnis Sports Center in Port Hood. Many fine young men have gone through the program, and the goal is to continue to provide that opportunity to all the aspiring young players in the “West” coverage area. Update: The Islanders won their first and only league championship during the 2016-17 season. They would go on to win the Atlantics and the Telus Cup as national champions, becoming the first team from Atlantic Canada to win the National U18 Championship. The franchise career scoring leaders are Avery Warner (100-59-63*-122*) and Stephen Fox (112-66*-50-116). 2016-17 TELUS CUP CHAMPIONS FROM THE INVERNESS ORAN: Cape Breton West place exclamation point on season by Bill Dunphy
The Cape Breton West Islanders added another first to their team history: an awards banquet in June. The end-of-season team celebration is usually held while there’s snow on the ground, but a few things got in the way this past season, such as a Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League championship, an Atlantic champ- ionship, and a national Telus Cup championship at the end of April.
This year’s banquet, held on Saturday at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood, also included a parade that began in Antigonish, an outdoor barbecue at the arena, and a meet-and- greet with the players.
If anyone thought the enthusiasm over the Islanders’ historic win had waned, they were sadly mistaken. Cars were parked from the top of the Wharf Road on Main Street down to the old wharf and everywhere in between. Tail-gate parties were happening everywhere and inside the rink a steady line of autograph seekers were keeping all 20 players busy, but a delicious roast beef dinner, prepared by the women of the Port Hood CWL, waits for no man or woman, and emcee Bob MacEachern soon had the 350-plus attendees lining up for their meal.
Guest speaker for the event was Murdock MacLellan, a former player who went on to play in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and then captain the St. F.X. X-Men while obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree. MacLellan was also a teammate of Islanders coach Kyle MacDonald when the team set a league record of 25 consecutive wins without a loss, wryly pointing out that it was about the only record this year’s version of the team didn’t break.
“You have won more titles and accolades than I’ve won in my whole career,” he said, noting their “never quit” attitude. “That’s the main reason why you were so successful.”
MacLellan, who was never drafted into the QMJHL and dead last in the Junior A draft, urged the players to never take themselves so seriously that they lose sight of what’s important in hockey.
“Don’t be in a rush to play Junior hockey, embrace another year of Midget if you can. You need to have fun and enjoy things in life (because) hockey is not always going to play out like you want it to,” he said. “The beautiful part about hockey is that tomorrow is another day.”
The team’s first major sponsor, Waycobah First Nation Chief Roderick Googoo, also congratulated the team. “There are so many people who sacrificed so much to get that team going,” he said, noting to applause the contribution the late John Carl Gillies made in the early years. “We were a temporary team back then (the Antigonish Novas had taken a leave of absence) and we didn’t get any respect. And starting out we weren’t winning and John Carl would say we’d get them next period, or next game, or next year. “Well, John Carl, we finally got ‘em!”
Googoo also pointed out that there are very few teams who can say their coaches were players who came back to coach, including assistants Willie MacDonald and Kyle Gillies. Gillies, John Carl’s son, also played on the first Cape Breton West team.
Head coach Kyle MacDonald spoke next. “I’m very, very thankful to be involved with such a group of young men. We set out to be the hardest working team in the league, and I think, with the leadership we had in the room, we achieved that.”
He recalled a weekend in Halifax during the regular season in which they lost to the McDonalds on Saturday in what he described as “one of our worst performances.” So before playing Dartmouth on Sunday, the coaching staff got the team up for a run at 6 a.m. “We were thinking how mad they’re going to be (but) everyone was in good cheer. They didn’t accept their effort the night before. They didn’t see it as punishment but as an opportunity to become a better team.”
The awards ceremony followed, with MacDonald speaking to the attributes of each award winner. The award winners included: Ewan MacDonald, rookie of the year; Fearghus MacDonald, coaches award; Liam MacKinnon, top defensive player; Avery Warner, top forward; Keenan Gillis, top defenceman; Jack Morris, most improved; Dylan MacDonald, unsung hero; Colten Ellis, playoff MVP; Jacob Hudson, MVP.
Academic advisor John Campbell was next to the podium, where he announced the academic and special achievement awards. “You would think that with all the late-night practices, weekend tournaments, league and playoff games, and trips across the country that the players would not have much time to keep their marks at a respectable level,” he said. “The following awards prove that being successful on the ice doesn’t mean that your scholastic successes need to suffer.”
The evening’s biggest winner was Dylan MacDonald, who walked away with bursaries and scholarships valued at $5,500. They included the $1,000 Esso Kids scholarship, which combines academic excellence, community involvement, role model characteristics, positive attitude, and future career planning; $500 Ice Jam scholarship; $1,000 Dianna Thornton Education Fund scholarship; $1,000 Donnie A.B. MacIsaac bursary; and the major award $2,000 Cape Breton Screaming Eagles scholarship.
The Cape Breton West Islanders $500 scholarship and trophy was presented to Spencer Barron. The $1,000 Judge R.E. (Bud) Kimball scholarship was won by Craig Ryan. Avery Warner received the $500 Ice Jam scholarship and the $500 Cape Breton Screaming Eagles team scholarship. Jacob Hudson was presented the 2017 Telus Cup MVP scholarship while in Prince George, valued at $1,000.
Islanders team President Brian MacInnis concluded the evening’s celebration, thanking the coaches and players, parents, members of the executive, special thanks to secretary Tammy MacDonald for going above and beyond the call of duty, and especially the Cape Breton West fans.
“We had a lot of close encounters this season,” MacInnis said, noting how the team emerged from three -way ties in the round-robin at Atlantics and the Telus Cup, then coming back from down 4-2 in the Telus Cup final. “That’s what champions are made of – they win the close ones.” And in closing, “The Islanders’ victory is your victory. We’re the best team in Canada.”
