NOVA SCOTIA JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE RECORD BOOK The Nova Scotia Junior 'B' hockey history has been researched and compiled by JPA. Any reproduction, in whole or in part is strictly prohibited.
|
THE EARLY YEARS The NSJBHL began in 1993-94. Prior to this, Junior 'B' hockey in the province of Nova Scotia was made up of various local leagues, including the Metro Valley Junior 'B' Hockey League, the Northum- berland Junior 'B' Hockey League, the Mainland Junior 'B' Hockey League, the Cape Breton Junior 'B' Hockey League (also known as the Eastern Junior 'B' Hockey League), the Halifax Suburban Junior Hockey League and several independent teams.

THE TRANSITION There Maritime and Atlantic Junior B championships were not held between 1974 and 1982, when the Don Johnson Cup came into play.
The Nova Scotia Hockey Association allowed the Eastern Junior 'B' Hockey League to play at the Junior 'A' level beginning with the 1974-75 season. Both the Antigonish Bulldogs and the Strait Pirates then left to join the Northumberland Junior 'B' Hockey League.
In 1977, the Metro-Valley League moved up to the Junior 'A' level. Along with the folding of the Cape Breton Junior 'B' League in 1978, this left the Northumberland League as the only Junior 'B' league in Nova Scotia, making their league champion the automatic Provincial champion.
In the early 1980's, the Eastern Junior 'A' League was demoted back to Junior 'B' and a couple of their teams merged with the Northumberland Junior 'B' League while the rest folded.
In 1980-81, the Mainland Junior 'B' Hockey League was formed. Their champion then played the Northumberland Junior 'B' League champion for the Provincial title.

THE DON JOHNSON MEMORIAL CUP
THE DON JOHNSON MEMORIAL CUP (Atlantic Junior 'B' Championship) Don Johnson was born and raised in Halifax. After playing minor hockey locally, he moved on to play senior hockey with Middleton and Digby in the Annapolis Valley. He later played and coached in Campbellton, NB. As an employee of the Bank Of Nova Scotia, Johnson was transferred to St. John's, Newfoundland in December of 1959. He played senior hockey at the local level for two years. During this time his St. Pat's team won the historic Boyle Trophy both seasons.
After his playing and coaching days were over , Johnson was elected president of the St. John's Junior and Senior Hockey League and in the mid 60's was elected president of the Newfoundland Amateur Hockey Association where he would help lead that province into union with the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association. In the 70's he was the first elected an officer of the CAHA, and later was elected president of the national body, a position he held for two years.
During Johnson's term in office, the CAHA returned to international hockey and the Canada Cup, and helmets were made mandatory.
He was an officer of the CAHA for ten years and was elected an Honorary Life Member in 1982. Johnson has attended every annual meeting of the CAHA since 1966.
The first Don Johnson Cup was played in 1982 in Kensington P.E.I. Johnson had the privilege of presenting the trophy to his own son, who was the assistant captain for the winning Brother Rice Junior Celtics from St. John's NL. Robert Cousin was the organizer of the inaugural tournament and led the initiative to have the trophy named in honour of Don Johnson.
There were no Atlantic Junior B championships held for five years between 1992 and 1996.
The Eastern Ontario Junior 'B' League was allowed to compete for the Don Johnson Cup during the 2013-14 season in an attempt to crown an Eastern Canadian champion, but this arrangement ended after just one season. The Casselman, ON Vikings won the tournament in their initial attempt.
The 2020 and 2021 Don Johnson Memorial Cup tournaments were both cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Kent Koyotes playing out of Cocagne, NB were scheduled to play host to the 2020 tournament and eventually hosted in 2022.

THE NOVA SCOTIA JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE In 1980-81, Al Hollingsworth founded the Mainland Junior 'B' Hockey League. In 1992, the Cape Breton Junior 'B' Hockey League ceased operations. The Cape Breton (Sydney) Millionaires and the Pt. Hawkesbury Strait Pirates joined the League. The League changed its name to the Nova Scotia Junior 'B' Hockey League the following season.
After the 1992-93 season, the Northumberland Junior 'B' League also folded. This saw the Nova Scotia Junior 'B' Hockey League add the Antigonish Jr. 'B' Bulldogs and the Pictou County Station House Icemen. Along with the return of Chester and Bedford, this gave the league 8 teams, and it became a two division set-up for the first time.
After having sponsored both the Don Johnson Cup and the various Junior 'B' Leagues in Atlantic Canada for several years, The Co-Operators Insurance Group dropped their sponsorship after the 2002-03 season.
At the end of the 2005-06 season, the Nova Scotia Junior 'B' Hockey League changed its name to the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League. It was felt that the Junior 'B' label suggested a second rate product.
The winners of the NSJHL compete for the Don Johnson Memorial Cup, which is emblematic of the Atlantic Canada Junior 'B' championship.

FROM THE AMHERST DAILY NEWS: Three goals, 40 seconds Published on October 27th, 2010 Darrell Cole
Blues' offence explodes in 8-3 win BROOKFIELD - The Cumberland County Blues exploded for a trio of third period goals just 40 seconds apart en route to an 8-3 win over the Brookfield Elks in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League action on Tuesday in Brookfield.
David Burke had three goals for the Blues while Zach Carson had two goals with Scott Lee had a goal and an assist.
Jared Wilson and Jesse Colborne each had assists.
"When the boys want to play they are as good as team as anyone in our league. It's just being committed and ready when the puck drops," Blues' coach and GM Ron Reynolds said. "It was probably the best game I've seen them play all year. We were short bodies. They played smart and with a lot of energy."
The Blues started the game with just four defencemen and while they led 3-1 after the first period Reynolds said it could easily have been a bigger lead.
Geoff Burke and Jeff Deruelle each had two assists while Jordie Shaw, Seth Crowe, Jason Pitts and Trevor Steen each had single helpers.
Lucas Dawe, Drew Clarke and Coady Read replied for the Elks, who managed to pull to within a goal of the Blues early in the third period before Cumberland's three-goal outburst.
"When they came back to make it 4-3 the boys stayed focused and scored a few to win the game," he said.
The win comes after a disappointing shootout loss on home ice to the Antigonish Bulldogs last Friday at the Richard Calder Arena in Springhill and a 5-4 overtime loss in Port Hawkesbury the week before.
"When you have 30 goals against and 18 of them are in the first period it shows you are not getting ready," Reynolds said. "They were ready to go and it showed."
The Blues return to action on Friday when they host the Glace Bay Miners at 7:30 p.m. The club is also home next Friday to face the Strait Pirates.
