CHARLOTTETOWN ISLANDERS Jim Hulton TEAM OUTLOOK: Head Coach/GM: Jim Hulton Imports: G Aksels Ozols; C Ondrej Maruna The Islanders are coming off Year 1 of their rebuild. Jim Hulton and his coaching staff are all returning, and they have some good young pieces to work with. The biggest question mark appears to be in goal, and a way to address that might be with the 14th overall pick in the CHL Import Draft in July where they also have the 74th pick. Update: The Islanders selected 2005 G Aksels Ozols of Latvia with their 2nd choice in the CHL Import draft. They also drafted big centre, Ondrej Maruna with their 1st import pick, 14th overall. Both are expected at training camp. The Islanders are never an easy 2 points, and that trend should continue this season. |

GOALTENDERS
Jack Flanagan
GOALTENDING: Heading into the summer, goaltending seems to be the Islanders biggest concern. Jim Hulton seems to be able to find capable goalies from outside the league, so the pattern is as likely to continue as not. There is also a chance that they could look to add a goalie in the CHL Import draft in July. Update: The Islanders picked 2005 G Aksels Ozols with their 2nd pick. Notes: 2004 G Carter Bickle was added to the roster on September 18th. 2006 G Niko Boudreau got into 3 games (0-3) with the Islanders last season. 2007 G Hudson Bradley has put up incredible numbers over the past couple of seasons. As a local, he could see some action as an AP next season. 2005 G Jack Flanagan got into 5 games with the Islanders last season going 0-3. He is expected to battle for the backup job. He gained some valuable experience with the Junior A Miramichi Timberwolves. Goaltenders need to have much better rebound control and puck- handling skills in Junior A than in U18. He could surprise in camp. 2003 G Dixon Grimes joined the Islanders in December from Guelph of the OHL and went winless in 10 games (0-8). He is still showing on the roster but will in all probability not be back. |
DEFENCEMEN
Marcus Kearsey
DEFENCE: The Islanders look to be very young on defence with only Alex Tessier listed as a 20 year-old. Lane Hinkley, Marcus Kearsey, Anton Topilnyckyj, Reid Vos and Carl-Etienne Michel are all eligible to return. With rookies Nathan Mossey, Zackary Plamondon and Owen Conrad all knock- ing at the door, it should make for a very competitive training camp. Notes: 2007 D Owen Conrad slipped to 20th in the draft after being ranked in the top handful on many lists for the majority of the season. He hasn't exactly come out of nowhere to become a top prospect, having led all D-men in scoring and being named the Best Defenceman in U15 two seasons ago, and then leading all D-men in scoring in U18 and being named the NSU18 Top Rookie Defenceman this past season. He will need to add some physicality, but with his size, he should quickly adjust and become as physical as he needs to be. As a 1st rounder with the rebuilding Islanders, I can't see him not being on the opening day roster. 2005 D Alexis Jacques was acquired from Victoriaville on August 22nd. 2006 D Marcus Kearsey had a fantastic season and was named the QMJHL Defensive Rookie of the Year. 2006 D Simon Duguay was a NBPEIU18 1st team All-Star this season with the Northern Moose. 2006 D Seamus MacEachern was named to the NBPEIU18 2nd All-Star team this season. 2004 D Carl-Etienne Michel was a steadying influence for the Islanders down the stretch after being acquired from Sherbrooke and should be back. 2005 D Nathan Mossey was injured for much of last season. He was rumoured to be joining the Islanders late in the season but never did. He put up 1-4-5 totals in 4 playoff games. He might have a bit of an edge on a roster spot amongst the rookies due to the lack of right shots on the training camp roster amongst D-men. Update: Mossey was removed from the training camp roster on August 22nd. 2007 D Zackary Plamondon was a 3rd round pick this season and is still a bit on the light side. He was ranked by many as a possible 1st round prospect until late in the season. 2003 D Alexandre Tessier will likely not be back as a 20 year-old with so many young D-men ready to step in who need to play a lot to develop. Update: Tessier was not on the official training camp roster on August 16th. 2005 Anton Topilnyckyj is a smooth skating mobile D-man who had a very good rookie season and should be ready to take on a bigger role. 2006 D Edouard Vincent got into a game with the Islanders last season as an AP. He shouldn't be overlooked as a possibility to earn a roster spot, especially if Alex Tessier isn't back. 2007 D Kenzie Wagner was named to the NSU18 All-Rookie All-Star team this season. |
FORWARDS
* These offseason looks at QMJHL teams will be updated as often as required leading up to training camps in August.
Giovanni Morneau
FORWARDS: The Islanders lacked scoring last season and were the only team in the league not to score 200 goals (189) during the regular season. While there is some good young talent, they will need increased production across the board. 2004 Slovak Peter Repcik was traded at the draft. Promising young prospect Matt Butler was signed in June and it is hoped that he can step right in and add some scoring. The Islanders have picks 14 and 74 in the CHL Import draft in July and could look to add some help up front. There seems a good chance that the Islanders might go with three 20 year-olds up front to address their lack of scoring. Update: The Islanders selected 6'4" C Ondrej Maruna of Slovakia with the 14th overall pick in the CHL Import draft on July 5th. Notes: 2005 LW Will Allen began the season with the Islanders (19-1-0-1-15) before finishing the season in Junior A with Miramichi. 2003 LW Kian Bell led the SJHL in goals (54) and points (102) this season and was named the league MVP and Player of the Year. He also led the NSU18 league in scoring during the 2020-21 season before playing with the Cape Breton Eagles for his rookie Q season. He's a proven goal scorer at every level and added 16 more goals in 13 playoff games. He could be another Bennett MacArthur type if given the opportunity. Update: Bell was claimed in waivers by the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL. 2003 LW Michael Horth finished with a tidy -1 on a team that allowed 87 more goals than it scored last season. His 28 goals would have been much higher had he played with any other team. He should be one of the top 20 year-olds in the league next season, even if his totals don't show it. 2003 LW Cole Huckins was added in a trade from Sherbrooke on August 14th. It gives the Islanders four 20 year-old forwards and one will need to be moved. 2004 LW Kiefer Lyons began the season with the Campbellton Tigers (16-18-16-34-16) and was recalled by the Islanders in December. He put up 3-2-5 totals in his final 6 games and should be back this season. Update: Lyons was released by the Islanders in late August and signed by the Saint John Sea Dogs as a free agent on September 8th. 2004 C Jarrett Todd was not on the official training camp roster on August 16. 2006 C Matthew Butler signed with the Islanders in June. He's very small but has high end talent and upside. 2003 C Giovanni Morneau was a huge addition last year from Rockland of the CCHL. He was able to step right in and lead the team in assists (33) and points (51). He should fill the role of number one center this season. 2006 RW Ross Campbell played the first half of the season with the Charlottetown Knights and was leading the league in scoring (20-16-16-32-73) before joining the Islanders. It looks like he's with the big team to stay. 2003 RW Owen Hollingsworth has commited to the University of Toronto Blues for the coming season (Elite Prospects) and will not be back. 2004 RW Simon Hughes joined Charlottetown mid-season in a trade with Drummondville and has found a home with the Islanders with his clutch scoring and physical play. 2003 RW Joel Marchon joined the Islanders in a mid-season trade with Sherbrooke. He could be caught in a numbers game in training camp being both a 20 year-old and an import. Update: Marchon is shown on Elite Prospects to be playing with Kloten this season. 2006 RW Alexis Michaud seemed to go from the penthouse to the outhouse from one game to the next last season and should be much more consistent this year in his second season. He should top the 20 goal mark this season. 2005 RW Lucas Romeo was another huge find from Ontario by Jim Hulton where he had been playing Junior B with Welland of the GOJHL. 2005 RW Mitchell Wagner began the season with the Yarmouth Mariners (15-2-1-3-4) before returning to the Cole Harbour Wolfpack in December. He had a strong finish with 18 goals in 19 games and then had a strong showing in the playoffs (9-5-8-13-10). He has really good size (6'4"-192 lbs.) and could surprise in training camp. Update: Mitchell Wagner's name was removed from the roster in early July. |
