SAINT JOHN SEA DOGS Anthony Stella  TEAM OUTLOOK:    Head Coach: Travis Crickard; GM: Anthony Stella    Imports: LW Eriks Mateiko; LW Pavel Simek                                                                                                                The Sea Dogs began their rebuild last season after winning the Memorial Cup. As most  expected, they finished near the bottom at 17th in the 18 team league, but their record  (24-38-5-1) wasn't as bad as it could have been with a couple of other teams in the  conference also looking to rebuild.    The Sea Dogs have a few good pieces in place, but it looks to be another trying season  ahead with a bit of a shallow roster, especially up front.    The Sea Dogs are in a good position in the CHL Import draft in July with picks 11 and 71.  It could allow them to trade one of Eriks Mateiko or Pavel Simek who both proved to be  solid imports. They could try to upgrade one of them with pick number 11 while also  bringing in an asset or two in a trade. They picked Simek 48th and Mateiko 108th in last  year's import draft.  Update: The Sea Dogs announced on July 4th that both Simek and Mateiko would be  back next season and they would pass on their import picks.    There was a bit of shuffling in hockey operations with Anthony Stella taking over as GM  and Trevor Georgie stepping into the role of President and CEO of JSM Sports Entertain-  ment and he will also continue to serve as the team President of the Sea Dogs.

GOALTENDERS

Patrick Leaver GOALTENDERS 03 Patrick Leaver   06 Justin Robinson    05 Sebastian Monaco   GOALTENDING:    Both Ventislav Shingarov and Olivier Brideau are eligible to return next season. Shingarov       played in 50 games and was often the Sea Dogs best player and should be back. Update:  Shingarov was reported to not be returning on July 31 (Kevin Barrett, Postmedia).    The Sea Dogs allowed the most goals in the league (318) and finished 17th of 18 teams. I  would guess that they go with the same duo to start the season, but team management could  also be looking to upgrade.    If the Sea Dogs could find a suitable number 1 goalie to replace Shingarov, it would  allow  them to keep both Jared Cosman and Mathis Gauthier as 20 year-old defencemen, or maybe  Alexis Cournoyer up front (assuming Peter Reynolds is back).  Notes:  2005 G Olivier Brideau was traded to Rimouski on August 27th.  2006 G Charles-Antoine Girard and 2006 G Justin Robinson both have good size and both put  up 7-13 won-lost records in Quebec U18 this past season.  2003 G Patrick Leaver was acquired as a free agent on August 29th. He played in a combined  48 OHL games last season split between Oshawa and Guelph.

Update: Cosman was released on August 27.  Update: Cosman showed on the Acadie-Bathurst roster on September 5th.  Notes:  2006 D Anthony Biakabutuka is the younger brother of Jeremie. He played Prep school in the  US last year, but should be able to vie for a spot if he opts for Major Junior.  2005 Nicolas Bilodeau came out of nowhere to put up 10 goals and 33 points and lead all  league rookie defencemen in scoring after being a 4th round pick in the 2021 draft. He's a bit  on the small side for a D-man but he's very stocky and sturdy on his skates.  2005 D Zachary Cloutier finished last season with the Junior A Terrebone Cobras (8-0-1-1-0).  2005 D Tristan Dassylva was acquired in a trade with Baie-Comeau and got into 1 game with  the Sea Dogs before finishing the season playing Junior A with the Princeville Titan.  2005 D Ian Dickie got into 7 games with the Sea Dogs before finishing the season with the  Grand Falls Rapids of the MHL.  2005 D Mirko Fernandez got into a game with the Sea Dogs last season. He looks to be a bit  of a late bloomer in U18. He had a strong playoff season (9-1-5-6-4).  2003 D Mathis Gauthier was obtained in a trade with Rimouski where he had served as team  captain. He should step right in with the Sea Dogs and add some stability.  2006 Matthew MacLean played his 16 year-old season with the Summerside Western Capitals  following in the blueprint of players like Zach Biggar and Jordan Spence. He's a good skater  with nice size and could get a long look in camp.  2004 D Matteo Mann was acquired in a trade from Chicoutimi on August 24th.  2004 D Duncan Ramsay is commited to play NCAA hockey with Vermont this coming season.  2006 D Jeremie Richard had a good rookie season as a 16 year-old. It's a really big step to  make that jump, and those who do usually show a lot of improvement in their second seasons  with the experience gained. Update: Richard missed training camp due to injury but is  expected back early in the season. Update: Richard will start the season with the Amherst  Ramblers of the MHL when he returns from the injury list.  2004 D Nate Tivey was a huge addition as a free agent from Ontario last season. He quickly  established himself as a top four D-man with the Sea Dogs. He was the third highest scoring  rookie D-man in the league trailing only teammate Nicolas Bilodeau and Marcus Kearsey.  2006 D Elie Warren is huge (6'7"-238 lbs.) and is the younger brother of Noah Warren.

He's  shown on Elite Prospects to be playing with Chicago Mission 16U for the coming season, but  I don't think that means anything is signed or official. Hopefully he's at training camp.  Update: The Sea Dogs signed Egan Beveridge on July 12th. Just a guess, but players will be  shuffled around by position to provide Beveridge with top six forward minutes. He won't play  third line center.  Notes:  2006 LW Reid Calder got into 7 games with the Sea Dogs and scored a goal. He also scored a  goal in 3 games with Grand Rapids of the MHL.  2004 LW Kiefer Lyons was added to the roster on September 8th after being released by the  Charlottetown Islanders. Update: Lyons began the season with the Campbellton Tigers of the  MHL.  2005 LW Sam-Luca Thifault is expected to be on the injury list until late September or early  November.  2004 C Samuel Assinewai (6-1-1-2-0) spent some time with the Flint Firebirds of the OHL last  season.  2007 C Egan Beveridge was a surprise pick in the 2nd round of the draft by the Sea Dogs.  He scored over 100 points at Mount Saint Charles Prep two seasons ago. Rumours have him  looking to be at the Sea Dogs' training camp and hoping to play Major Junior. Update: Egan  signed with the Sea Dogs on July 12th.  2005 C Cole Burbidge had a stellar rookie season and established himself as a top six forward  last season. Update: Burbidge was traded to Cape Breton on August 1st for two 1st round  picks and a 2nd.  2004 C Niko Laforge is expected to be on the injury list until early October.  2004 C Cameron Lowe got into 4 games last year with the Erie Otters of the OHL.  2005 C Jack O'Blenis (8-2-4-6-80) showed well as an AP with the Miramichi Timberwolves.  2004 C Davide Patella played at a very high level in the BCHL and then with the national  champion Brooks Bandits of the AJHL. He should get a good look in camp.  2005 Peter Reynolds has been the center of trade rumours since the end of last season. He  could help the Sea Dogs' rebuild with a significant trade return but reportedly has a no-trade  contract. Another rumour had him leaving to play at UNB, but so far there is nothing to back  up that claim.  2004 C Kency Pierre-Noel played 8 games with Acadie-Bathurst during the 2021-22 season  (8-0-0-0-2).  2006 RW Chad Bellemare got into 2 games with the Sea Dogs last season and should get a  long look in camp.  2005 RW Luka Benoit was a solid addition by the Sea Dogs in mid-season from Nepean of the  CCHL (27-8-8-16-16).  2003 RW Alexis Cournoyer had a good season and put up decent numbers last year with the  Sea Dogs, but the competition will be tough for the three overage spots between he, Cosman,  Gauthier, Peter Reynolds and Shingarov. Update: Cournoyer has signed with Prince George  of the BCHL for the coming season.  2003 LW Alexis Brisson and 2003 C Mathis Cloutier were added to the training camp roster  on July 31 (Kevin Barrett, Postmedia). Both had been released from their teams from last  season. Brisson had been with Blainville and Cloutier split the season between Shawinigan  and Val d'Or. Update: Brisson was dropped from the training camp roster on August 19th.  Update: Cloutier was released on August 24th.

He was listed on  the final CSR list of American born players. He scored 4  goals in 4 games for the Rhode  Island Saints at the U14 US Nationals. He was chosen 1st overall in the NCDC draft and is  listed to play for the Madison Capitols of the USHL next season on Elite Prospects.     Watching some of his game action, he's fast and can dangle with the puck at top speed.  He does things like going through the legs and beating defenders to the outside. He's  extremely quick on the wraparound and is smart on the forecheck and forcing turnovers.  I would go so far as to say that he's likely the most offensively gifted player selected in the  draft.  Update: In an interview from the QMJHL draft, Egan says he is happy to be drafted by the   Sea Dogs and Anthony Stella assures all that he will be playing with the Sea Dogs. He was  scheduled to attend the Sea Dogs' summer development camp as this update was being  put together on June 24th. Although he's just a shade on the small side, he is a huge  addition for the Sea Dogs. All things point to him being one of the top rookies in the league  this coming season.

Every scouting report says  the same thing - explosive, good speed and quickness. His 21 goals were the most on his  team and 6th best in the league. He finished 3rd in team scoring with 34 points.    On the downside, he's listed at only 5'7" and 141 lbs., which has dropped him well down   on most prospective draft lists. He does get an 'A' ranking on the latest CSR list, but only  one other draft source lists him as high as an early 3rd round choice.    Watching his game vids, he's one of those smallish skeeter-bug types who can dazzle.  He plays both special teams and wins a healthy 48% of his registered puck battles, but  his physical play and his up and down 200 foot game is something that will need some  work to translate well at the Major Junior level.  Update: The profile above was put together heading towards the 2022 QMJHL draft. Chad  was eventually picked by the Sea Dogs in the 4th round, 64th overall. He returned to U18  and had a very good season with 22 goals in 33 games. He also got into 2 games with the  Sea Dogs. With a couple of roster spots open heading towards training camp, he should  stand a good chance of making the opening night roster.

Drafted QMJHL: Saint John (2023-7-127)   Me 46   CSR 43   HP 41 2007 JULIEN BONNET, Saint-Hyacinthe Gaulois 6'3" - 180 lbs. Defence: Shoots L SEASON TEAM / LEAGUE GP G A PTS. PIM 2021-22 Mortagne QM15AAA  27     2     5      7   26 2021-22 Richelieu QM17E    5    0    0      0     0 2022-23 Saint-Hyacinthe QM18AAA  34    4  10   14   28    Julien Bonnet already has impressive size at 6'3" and 180 lbs. He is primarily a defensive   defenceman who is showing he can add a bit of offense. He needs to work on his skating  and mobility, but there are some similarities in style to last year's 1st overall pick, Tomas  Lavoie. He can gallop once he hits his stride.   Julien projects to become a shutdown defenceman at the Q level who can add a good level  of physicality. I don't mean at all to knock his play or what he brings. He's very good at  what he does and several posters on the various social media platforms have him ranked  as high as the 1st round on their lists. I think he will be a solid 3rd rounder who could jump  up into the 2nd according to what some teams are looking for.

His composure with the puck and play away from it is second to none. His  instincts and feel for the position are tremendous." - Craig Eagles, FDS    Matt MacLean missed the full 2021-22 season with a foot injury and went undrafted in  both the QMJHL and MHL drafts last year. He began his 16 year-old season with the Char-  lottetown Knights and put up 8 points in 9 games before joining the Western Capitals in  November. He stepped right in and played a regular shift, and often played with Ed McNeill  on the top pairing.    He's big and mobile and has a nice skating stride. He looks after his own end first and can  play both sides. He likes to headman the puck with a quick pass, but he'll jump up if he has  an opening. With 2-9-11 totals and 55 PIM in only 42 Junior A games, he showed he was  physically ready to play at the next level. I would guess he's going to surprise at a Q camp.  He went a bit under the radar by missing a season, but he sped up his development big  time by playing Junior A at 16.

Updates have been made with the reported decision not to bring back 2003 goaltender Ventislav Shingarov while adding 2003 LW Alexis Brisson and 2003 C Mathis Cloutier to the training camp roster.

Neither of the two additions had been listed on the preseason rosters of their former teams.

A gut feeling points to Peter Reynolds possibly being on the move - or maybe heading to UNB as mentioned a couple of times on the various message boards.

TRADE: Sea Dogs acquire Flyers prospect Matteo Mann

SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs have acquired Philadelphia Flyers prospect Matteo Mann from the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, the team announced on Thursday. In return, Chicoutimi receives their own second-round pick in 2024 and a third-round pick in 2026.

“It’s not everyday an NHL prospect with Matteo’s package becomes available,” said Sea Dogs general manager Anthony Stella. “We feel this trade makes us tougher to play against, it makes us more competitive and most importantly gives us a better chance at winning hockey games.”

Mann, a six-foot-six, 222-pound defenceman, was selected by the Flyers in the seventh round of the 2023 NHL Draft. The Sackville, New Brunswick native spent the past three seasons with the Sagueneens registering three goals and 14 assists.

Sea Dogs announce changes to Hockey Operations and Scouting staff

SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs announced today that Justin Landry has been promoted to Assistant to the General Manager, Marc-Olivier Heredia has been promoted to Head of Player Personnel and Head Scout, and Chris Hatzitolios has been promoted to Hockey Operations Assistant.

Landry is entering his seventh year with the Sea Dogs organization. The Quispamsis, New Brunswick native will be assisting with strategy, transactions and the draft. Landry will also continue in his role as Head of Analytics.

“Justin was my first hire when I came into a management role seven years ago and we have worked side by side ever since,” said Sea Dogs general manager Anthony Stella. “He’s been vital to the building and success of our last championship and will now take on a bigger role towards this new challenge of winning another cup.”

A product of Montreal, Quebec, Heredia enters his sixth year with the team having worked as a scout since 2018. His main focus will be prospect relationships and the QMJHL Draft.

“I’ve worked closely with Marco for five years now and I’m very proud to see his growth over the years,” commented Stella. “His work ethic and professionalism is unmatched and he’s grinded his way into these new roles.”

In his fourth year with the organization, Hatzitolios will take on increased scouting duties while also assisting with hockey operations administrative duties. The Toronto, Ontario native is also Hockey Operations Assistant for the AHL’s Laval Rocket and Associate General Manager for the Montreal Phoenix of the Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League.

“Chris brings a great work ethic and continues to learn and grow. He’s someone who’s always up to the task, determined and hungry,” said Stella.

The team also announced that Sean Mundey and Andy Lehoux will return to the scouting staff, while Trevor Scott has been hired as a scout. Senior Advisor Wayne Mundey is also back for his eighth year with the Sea Dogs.

“It’s very important to build a legacy and to promote from within. We have a culture of work ethic and loyalty to each other that is infectious and we want to continue to build on that,” Stella added. “Development is not only important on/off the ice for players but for the hockey ops staff as well. This group is up to the challenge of building another competitive team and pushing to win another championship. We will not be outworked.”
