SHERBROOKE PHOENIX Gilles Bouchard  TEAM OUTLOOK:    Head Coach: Gilles Bouchard; GM: Philippe Sauve    Imports: C Frantisek Dej; C Jakub Hujer                                                                                                                The Sherbrooke Phoenix went "all in" last year and fell to the Halifax Mooseheads in the    semifinals. It goes without saying that the rebuild begins now.    On paper, they have several 2003 born players eligible to return, but several of them  are very likely going  to be playing pro hockey somewhere next season. In the event they  could get one or two back, it could really help kickstart the rebuild with a couple of trades.    Please keep in mind that I'm trying to learn about the teams and their rosters and depth  as I put the info together. What I project from the outside and what the team staff have  in mind will likely be much different. This is a message forum, not a pro publication.   Update: The Phoenix named Philippe Sauve their new GM and Gilles Bouchard their new  head coach on July 9th.

Samuel St-Hilaire GOALTENDERS 04 Samuel St-Hilaire   05 Mathys Routhier  GOALTENDING:    Goaltending appears to be OK with 2004 Samuel St-Hilaire filling the starting role and the    backup job up for grabs.  Notes:  2006 G Samuel Lamarche was a 5th round pick of Rimouski in the 2022 QMJHL draft and is  on loan to the Phoenix for training camp.  2005 Nathan St-Germain is huge at 6'7" and 194 lbs. and could battle for the backup role.

Tremblay-Mathieu and Marcil  are both experienced 19 year-olds, and first round pick Louis-Alex Tremblay give them what  could be an OK top four.  Notes:  2005 D Jesse Carriere got into 9 games with the Phoenix last season (9-0-0-0-0).  2005 D Frederic Deschenes is listed to be playing with West Kelowna of the BCHL this  coming season and is NCAA commited to Michigan State for the 2024-25 season.  2003 D Joe Fleming is signed by Vegas and will likely play Pro this season.  2003 D Marc-Andre Gaudet is signed by St. Louis and shows to be playing with Springfield  of the AHL next season (Elite Prospects).  2003 Tyson Hinds is signed by Anaheim and likely going to be playing Pro this season.  2005 D Jean-Felix Lapointe got into 2 games last season with the Phoenix (2-0-0-0-0).  2006 D Kaden McNeil split his 16 year-old season between Rothesay-Netherwood and the  Miramichi Timberwolves of the MHL. He always seems to play well in the games I see him. I  think he will get a really long look in camp.  2003 D David Spacek is signed by Minnesota and won't be back this season.

If they keep Christophe  Rondeau on defence, only two of Cole Huckins, Andrew Belchamber, Jaheem Lagace and  Israel Mianscum could return. I can only venture a guess, but the Phoenix will likely try to  move a couple who they could get the biggest return for. This is only my opinion.  Notes:  2005 LW Olivier Dubois was acquired in a trade from Rouyn-Noranda on August 25th.  2005 LW Amine Hajibe is NCAA commited to Nebraska-Omaha for the 2025-26 season.  2003 LW Cole Huckins is a Calgary draft pick but is unsigned and projected to be back with  the Phoenix this season (Elite Prospects). Update: Huckins was traded to Charlottetown on  August 14.  2007 LW Mavrick and LW Shawn Ordines are twins.  2007 C Robin Benoit was not at training camp.  2003 C Jakub Brabenec is signed by Vegas and won't be back this season.  The Phoenix picked 2005 C Frantek Dej with their 1st pick in the CHL Import draft, 47th  overall from Slovakia.  2004 C Tristan Dussault got into 1 game with the Phoenix last season (1-0-0-0-0).  2004 C Mathis Fortin got into 1 game with the Phoenix last season (1-0-0-0-0).  2005 C Lewis Gendron got into 7 games with the Phoenix last season (7-0-2-2-0).  2005 C Manix Sarrasin got into 19 games with Moncton two seasons ago (19-2-0-2-2).  2003 RW Jaheem Lagace-Aurelien has signed to play Junior A this season with Terrebone.  2006 RW Vincent Lagare was acquired in a trade from Moncton on August 25th.  2003 RW Jacob Melanson is signed by Seattle and will play Pro this season.  2006 RW Niko Tournas is NCAA commited to New Hampshire for the 2024-25 season.  2006 RW Coen Miller split the season between U18 and Junior A and has produced at every  level. He could be a dark horse to make the team in training camp. He's very elusive and a  creative playmaker.  2003 RW Joshua Roy is signed by Montreal and will play Pro this season.

Saint-Francois QM18AAA  42    8   29   37   22     "Louis-Alex Tremblay is a blueliner blessed with great vision that he uses well in breakout      situations as well as offensively. His good reading of the game allows him to lead his team  into the offensive zone and settle in. Always a very involved player, he never hesitates to  jump in the play and join the rush. Although he makes up for it with his constant effort,  Louis-Alex will have to improve his skating before suiting up in the QMJHL." - Frédéric  Lévesque, CSR Scout    “Throughout the year, my goal was to work with him to make him even more complete. We  knew he had a good vision of the game. He moves the puck well. The goal was to work on  his defensive game to make him a more complete player, and we're really satisfied with his  progress." Mikael Tam, Seminaire Saint-Francois head coach    Louis-Alex Tremblay is a good skater with excellent mobility who loves to join the rush. He  can run a powerplay efficiently and has a good shot from the point. He's a bit on the small  side, but very strong. He's very good at puck recovery and is very combative for his size.    He finished 2nd in scoring by a defenceman this season in QU18AAA with 36 points, trailing  only Alex Huang. For a complete unknown before this season with no previous stats available,  his stock has risen steadily all season. He will need to get bigger and stronger to take the  next step to major junior.    I'm trying to project how well a player will do in the QMJHL, not in the NHL, and there's a  huge difference.    Louis-Alex had a good showing at the Canada Games (6-1-3-4-2).

Drafted QMJHL: Sherbrooke (2023-3-56)   Me 49   CSR 35   HP 42 2007 ROBIN BENOIT, Bakersfield Roughnecks 6'1" - 170 lbs. Right Wing: Shoots R SEASON TEAM / LEAGUE GP G A PTS. PIM 2021-22 Sag-Lac Espoirs QM15AAA  29   12   19    31   12 2022-23 Bakersfield Roughnecks USPHL  24  15  15   30   10    "Originally from Lac St-Jean, Quebec, Robin opted to move south of the border to play in  the USPHL in 2022-23. A centerman with a good frame, he has great puck handling and  shooting skills, and has displayed an above average hockey sense on the offensive side of  things. Benoit has averaged just over a point per game in recent seasons, at all levels in  which he’s played. He still needs to refine his skating and to work on his explosion, as well  as improve his play without the puck and his consistency. In addition to excelling at hockey,     Robin is an elite level golfer who competed in last summer’s Quebec Games in that sport."  - Pierre Cholette, CSR Director of Scouting    Robin Benoit is a big winger who decided to go play in the USPHL, which is the equivalent    of a really good league comparable to most Canadian Junior A leagues (IMO). Now a solid  6'1" and 170 lbs. at 15, he is far and away the scoring leader in his age group with almost  three times as many points as the runner-up. His game action shows a player already  dominant against players up to 20 year-olds. He's a good skater with a nice wrist shot and  his skating is well above average.    It's tough to compare the USPHL Elite league with our U18 leagues, but if Robin doesn't  choose the NCAA path, he could be a steal in the draft. Robin also has a golf scholarship,  which might make the NCAA path a bit more of an option.

Drafted QMJHL: Sherbrooke (2022-3-52)  Me 27  CSR 27  HP 23 2006  COEN MILLER, Cole Harbour U18 5'10" - 147 lbs. Left Wing/Centre: Shoots L SEASON TEAM / LEAGUE GP G A PTS. He plays mostly at left wing but can also move  into the middle when called for. Even at age 15 on a veteran laden Wolkpack team, he was  the go to quarterback on the PP setting up at the half-wall on the  right side - threading  passes for one timers and quick East-West shots. He could also bury the puck himself when  given the chance.    He led the league in goals (25) this season, finished 3rd in points (49), and was named the  NSU18MHL Rookie of the Year. He continued producing in the playoffs with 5-8-13 totals in 8  games.    Analytics show that he finished 3rd in team CORSI (159) and 4th in SOG and +/-. The only  question mark, along with his light weight, is a 36% success rate in puck battles. He will  surely improve on that and get bigger over the next few seasons. He also needs to work on  his quickness a bit.    Coen is ranked to go early in the 2nd round in the various draft sources and is included on  the CSR list of 33 'A' prospects released in March.  Update: The above profile was put together a year ago leading up to the 2022 QMJHL draft.  Coen returned to U18 with Cole Harbour and dominated. He was running away with the  scoring title before jumping up to play Junior A with South Shore for the second half of the  season. He made the jump look easy with 26 points in 24 games as a 16 year-old.

Drafted QMJHL: Sherbrooke (2022-4-69)  Me 47  CSR 49  HP NR (March) 2006  KADEN McNEIL, Rothesay-Netherwood U18 6'0" - 179 lbs. Defence: Shoots L SEASON TEAM / LEAGUE GP G A PTS. PIM 2020-21 Northern Moose NBU18MHL   16      4     5      9   37 2021-22 Rothesay-Netherwood U18 AAA  39     2    1     3   34 2021-22 Rothesay-Netherwood Monctonian     3     0    0     0     0 2021-22 Team Green QMJHL Cup    4     0    3     3     2 2022-23 Rothesay-Netherwood Prep  48     1  27   28   62 2022-23 Miramichi Timberwolves MHL  27     0    8     8   26     Kaden McNeil is a big, rugged defensive defenceman from Rothesay-Netherwood Prep   School who can skate like the wind. He has an incredible burst of speed he flashes from  just inside of his own blueline through the neutral zone to gain the offensive zone. He is  about as mobile a defenceman as you'll find in the draft in his own end and fluid in puck  retrieval.      He didn't put up big offensive numbers, and the only question I have is in trying to  figure out how that happened because he can go coast to coast with the puck almost at  will. His physical presence and eagerness to play that style are obvious. He has the poise  of a Q veteran at 15.      Analytics show that the Riverhawks coaches leaned on him heavily with an average of  20:01 TOI. He played what appear to be 1st pair PK minutes and 2nd pair PP minutes. He's  amongst the team leaders in hits.     It seems strange sometimes as you can find yourself playing down a player with solid  scoring totals - and other times gushing about a player with low goal and point totals, but  IMO, Kaden McNeil might eventually end up as the biggest sleeper in the draft.    As with most prep school players, there's always an outside chance of possible NCAA  aspirations, but other than that, I think he could develop into a stud QMJHL defenceman.  His compete level seems to be off the charts. Kaden is on the list of 'B' prospects on the  latest CSR release and played at the Quebec Cup in late April.  Update: The profile above was put together a year ago leading up to the 2022 QMJHL draft.  Kaden returned to RNS for the first half of the season and then joined the Miramichi Timber-   wolves of the MHL for the second half. I thought he looked good with the Timberwolves from  what I watched - looking after his own end first. I think he might have a really good chance  to make the Phoenix in camp.

Director-manager Philippe Sauvé and his team confirmed their final roster this afternoon to start the 2023-2024 season. Known for a few days, Mathys Routhier will assist veteran goalkeeper Samuel St-Hilaire. Gilles Bouchard will be able to count on 8 defenders and 14 attackers to make up his formation. Note that our 2 European players, Jakub Hujer and Frantisek Dej, will arrive in Sherbrooke this week.
