VAL D'OR FOREURS Maxime Desruisseaux TEAM OUTLOOK: Head Coach/GM: Maxime Desruisseaux Imports: D Tomas Cibulka; C Samuel Fiala The Val d'Or Foreurs (24-40-2-2) finished last in their conference last season and second worst in the league. After finishing second overall during the 2020-21 season trailing only Charlottetown, this season appears to be year three of their rebuild.
The Foreurs are expected to finish in the upper one third of the league this season in the prediction threads, and that would seem about right to an outsider looking in.

DEFENCE: The Foreurs added 2003 D Charles-Antoine Pilote from Gatineau and it looks like he will anchor their defence. With at least three 19 year-olds expected to return, they should be in pretty good shape on the back end.
Notes: 2006 D Evan Depatie got into 4 games with the Foreurs last season (4-0-0-0-0).
2003 D Felix Paquet played his last game with the Foreurs in October and doesn't show any stats for the rest of the season on Elite Prospects. I'm guessing he is no longer in the plans.
2006 D Louis-David Veilleux got into 2 games with the Foreurs last season (2-0-0-0-0).

Notes: 2004 LW Jason Desruisseaux (22-0-3-3-8) spent the first half of the season with the Foreurs before joining Princeville for the second half.
2005 LW Mathys Lapointe got into 5 games with Victoriaville two seasons ago (5-0-0-0-0).
The Foreurs picked 2005 C Samuel Fiala with the 5th pick overall in the CHL Import draft. He looks to be a bit of a goal scorer.
2003 C Alex Gaudio was acquired in a trade from Rimouski on August 23rd.
2005 C Connor Macey was officially acquired from Shawinigan on August 26th after being on loan during training camp.
2006 RW Felix Lunam got into 2 games with the Foreurs last season (2-0-0-0-2).
2003 RW Zackary Michaud is still showing on the training camp roster but doesn't look to be in the Foureurs' plans.
2006 LW Teddy Stiga is NCAA commited to Boston College for the 2024-25 season.
2003 RW Louis Robin is shown to be playing this season with Zug of the Swiss league on Elite Prospects.
2005 RW Alexis Tanguay (22-1-2-3-0) began last season with the Foreurs before returning to U18 with Levis for the rest of the season.

IN THE SYSTEM - VAL D'OR FOREURS Drafted QMJHL: Val d'Or (2023-1-11) Me 6 CSR 16 HP 11
2007 PHILIPPE VEILLEUX, Coll. Charles-Lemoyne 5'9" - 150 lbs. Left Wing: Shoots LSEASON | TEAM / LEAGUE | GP | G | A | PTS. | PIM | 2019-20 | Rive-Sud Coll. "Philippe is a very talented winger who excels at finding open space in tight areas. He is dangerous in the pay zone thanks to his accurate shot that he releases quickly. Veilleux also won a bronze medal with Team Quebec at this winter’s Canada Games. Intelligent and very agile on his skates, Philippe has a great understanding of the game. He makes good decisions instead of forcing plays and, with his strong puck control, he is able to generate offense for both himself and his teammates. He’s the kind of player that makes others around him better." - Jean-Pierre Belzil, CSR Scout
Philippe Veilleux is a highly skilled forward with College Charles-Lemoyne who has great vision and good hands. Watching his game action is almost like a constant highlight reel with his whirling dervish offensive style. His dekes and dangles often leave D-men and goalies sprawling and out of position. Scouting reports mention him as having unlimited offensive upside.
He has been projected as a bit of a hockey prodigy and had more than 24,000 followers on Instagram at 13 years-old. He finished tied for 2nd in QU15 scoring with Louis-Francois Belanger last season with 47 points, trailing only Shawn Carrier.
This season, he finished 4th in QM18AAA rookie scoring and tied for the 4th most goals of all players with 23 - the same number as Caleb Desnoyers and Antoine Fontaine. One of his goals was a 'Michigan' this season. He finished 8 points ahead of fellow rookie, Nathan Quinn, in Riverains scoring. On a better team, his numbers would have likely been much higher.
Philippe will need to get a bit bigger and stronger to excel in the QMJHL, but there seems to be little question whether he will star at the next level. He is one of the few very top players who hasn't been featured with a draft bio by a CSR scout so far, but his coach with the Riverains refers to him as "a magician with the puck."
Update: Philippe led all players in scoring at the final leg of the QMJHL Cup (4-4*-3*-7*-0).

Drafted QMJHL: Val d'Or (2023-1-15) Me 40 CSR 18 HP 34

Jordan Labelle is already huge at 6'4" and 170 lbs. and has an imposing presence on the ice. He's a better than average skater who likes to cruise down the wing and wrist a heavy shot on goal. He's a force when he has time to set up in the goalie's grill in front of the net. He plays a similar style to Gabe Smith of the Moncton Wildcats.
While his scoring totals haven't been off the charts so far, with his size and skating, he has the tools to become a 2nd or 3rd line power forward at the next level who can add depth scoring. If he can learn the cycle game, he could become a force at the Q level.

Drafted QMJHL: Val d'Or (2023-2-23) Me 134 CSR 38 HP 103

Esther-Blondin QM18AAA | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Alexis Fortin is a big, mobile defenceman with offensive instincts who flew completely under my radar. I don't know a lot about the Quebec U17 league. Most of the game vid available is distant and grainy, and even when you find good quality, you're often left trying to track players by number from a camera closer to one end of the rink. As with Maddux Labre, I'm going to defer to the CSR scouts who had him ranked on their list of 'B' prospects in February, and 38th overall on their final list in May. They are the only two players on my list who I defer to the CSR scouts without having enough to properly evaluate on my own. In short, a player with a 'B' rating and ranked to go in the 2nd round according to CSR scouting needs to be on this list.
|
Drafted QMJHL: Val d'Or (2022-2-24) Me 32 CSR 19 HP 18
2006 ALIX DUROCHER, Magog U18 5'7" - 144 lbs. Centre: Shoots LSEASON | TEAM / LEAGUE | GP | G | A | PTS. | PIM | 2019-20 | Coll. St-Bernard LHPS Major 15 | 22 | 6 | 11 | 17 | 18 | 2020-21 | Coll. Alix Durocher is a smallish, quick skating centre with a high hockey IQ who generates a lot of scoring chances. He's elusive and often slips in behind the opponents' defence at the back door and goes unnoticed until the puck is on his stick. He's listed at 5'7" and 144 lbs. on the most generous listings, but looks a bit smaller.
In a "Road to the QMJHL Draft" installment on the QMJHL website, CSR scout Fred Simard uses words like "reads play," "shoots at the right time" and "generates offense" to describe his play.
He led the Magog team this season in goals (19) and finished 3rd in points (39). The 39 points were good for 17th in the league. Analytics show that he finished 2nd on the team in SOG (172) and put a solid 66% of his shot attempts on goal. He has a good shot and a quick release that is likely going to get even better as he gets stronger. He won 50% of his faceoffs and a surprising 53% of his puck battles, given his size.
Alix is ranked to go between 18th and 32nd in the upcoming Q draft by a couple of reputable sources and is included in the recent CSR list of 33 'A' prospects. The only question mark seems to be with size and physicality. He has a ton of upside if he gets a bit bigger.
Update: The above profile was put together a year ago leading up to the 2022 QMJHL draft. Alix returned to Magog and had a solid season. He got a bit bigger and is now shown as 5'8" and 151 lbs. He didn't put up overly big numbers, but he played on a very good Magog team where minutes had to be shared around amongst a deep group of forwards. He could be a tough cut for the coaches at training camp.
