TRACTION CENTRAL IMPACT
Team History
From Atlantic Online HockeyTraction Central Impact is a franchise in the NL U18 AAA Major Hockey League. The Impact first joined the league in 2018. While based in Grand Falls-Windsor, in the heart of the island of Newfoundland, the team draws players from throughout the Central Region of the province, from the Bay Verte Peninsula in the west to Glovertown in the east, including communities such as Gander, Lewisporte, Twillingate, Bishop’s Falls, Springdale and others. Each year a number of players from the Labrador part of the province also join the team. It is an integral part of the community of Grand Falls-Windsor where it plays its home games at the Windsor Stadium and Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium, drawing hundreds of fans to each game, growing in popularity each season. Like the other four teams in the NLU18AAAMHL the Impact is an independently owned franchise and is run by Glenn Casey, who is also the team’s General Manager along with Shane Lukinchuk. Brian Casey is the current Head Coach of the team. Traction Heavy Duty Parts in Grand Falls-Windsor came on board as the team’s Title Sponsor at the beginning of the 2022-2023 season. Update: The Central Ice Pak were a member of the NLU18HL since it formed in 2006 and played out of the Windsor Stadium until dropping out of the league after the 2016-17 season. After a year with only four league franchises, the Central Impact rejoined the league for the 2018-19 season, bringing the league back up to five teams. For all intents and purposes, it's the same franchise playing and drawing out of the Grand Falls-Windsor area. The franchise won their only league championship during the 2013-14 season. There is a discrepancy on Wiki that claims that Western Kings eliminated the Ice Pak in the league final, so if anybody can clarify, please do. The league history has not been very well documented, so it's very hard to piece everything together. Franchise career scoring leaders are Cody Drover (79-68*-65*-133*); Alex Snow (52-42-53-95) and Brent Broaders (91-42-44-86). FROM THE SALTWIRE NETWORK: Newfoundland & Labrador > Sports Central Impact returns to provincial major midget hockey league Nick Mercer · Multimedia Journalist Posted: Oct. 7, 2019
There is a void being filled in provincial major midget hockey circles by the Central Impact. The latest central Newfoundland entry in the Newfoundland and Labrador Major Midget Hockey League, the Impact is giving players an avenue to play at the highest level without having to leave home.
Last season the Impact’s predecessor, the Central IcePak, folded before the season began and left a void for midget-aged hockey players. Some of them found games with the local minor midget entry, while others played minor hockey or high school in the absence of the IcePak.
Enter the Impact and co-owners Glenn Casey and Shane Lukinchuk. They believed young players needed a place in the league to reach their heights
“We want to help kids local,” said Casey. “Hopefully, this is something else for hockey fans and we hope people come out to get an appreciation for the brand of hockey.”
Developmentally, having a major midget team in the area is good for players who want to play abroad. Teams usually participate in two tournaments in Moncton and Halifax, respectively, giving players a chance to show their skills to scouts.
This season was always going to be an uphill climb for the Impact when it came to winning. Of the 24 players on its roster, only Kobe Burt and Jack Cameron have experience at the major midget hockey level.
Burt, a forward from Grand Falls-Windsor, played with the Tri Pen Osprey last season after the IcePak folded. He was a part of the group that made the league finals, while Cameron got into one game with league champion Western Kings last season.
Adding to that, there was no central Newfoundland entry in the provincial bantam AAA league either. It's another hockey avenue that has returned this season. Outside of Burt and Cameron, the rest are getting their first taste of the province’s highest level of minor hockey.
That means adjusting to not only the speed of the game, but also getting used to taking a body check and playing with your head up. It is important to remember if a player is with a home association that does not play in the A division, there is no body checking allowed under HNL regulations.
“We understand that some of these players are jumping to major midget for the first time and it is going to take a little bit of time,” said Casey. “We are improving.”
This weekend the Impact are off, but they will head to the west coast for a pair of games with the Western Kings in Corner Brook Oct. 19-20 in an effort to get better.
It has been an early struggle for the club as it dropped each contest heading into last weekend, but there have been notable improvements. The Impact picked up its first win with a 4-1 victory over the Tri Pen Osprey on Oct. 6.
Games have been closer on the scoreboard and on the ice. Practices have been better and players are understanding the system more.
"It is a bit of a marathon and not a sprint for some of them,” said Casey. “Nobody likes to lose and we’ve been very open, direct and players enthusiastic about things.”

EAST COAST BLIZZARD
Team History
From Atlantic Online HockeyThe Under 18 Major East Coast Blizzard have been proud members of the NLU18MHL since the 2016/2017 season. The club plays out of The Glacier Arena in Mount Pearl, NL, and is home to teenage hockey players from across the Metro St. John’s area. 2020/2021 League Champions, the Blizzard’s experienced coaches and dedicated volunteers work to help players move onto the next step of their hockey journey, whether that’s in the QMJHL, NCAA, Junior A, prep school, or at home in the St. John’s Junior Hockey League. The East Coast Blizzard hosted the U18 Major Atlantic Hockey Championships in 2022. Update: The East Coast Blizzard appear to have been the original St. John's Maple Leafs franchise from the 1990's. After a season as the Maple Leafs, they became known as the St. John's Fog Devils to fall in line with the St. John's Fog Devils of the QMJHL who had a franchise from 2005 to 2008. Rick Babstock was the head coach as far back as 2004. After the QMJHL Fog Devils relocated to Montreal in 2008, the franchise would continue to operate as the Fog Devils for two more seasons (2008-09 and 2009-10). They rebranded as the St. John's Privateers for the 2010-11 season, and became known as the East Coast Blizzard for the 2015-16 season. The 2009-10 Fog Devils are the only league team in history to have a perfect season going 23-0 while scoring a whopping 212 goals (just under 10 per game) while allowing only 28 (just over 1 per game). They would go on to win the Atlantics in Halifax and eventually won the Bronze at the Telus Cup in Levis, Quebec. Three time league scoring champion Zack O'Brien (78-131*-84*-215*-10) is far and away the franchise (and league) career scoring leader. Sean Wadden (50-78-48-126), Mike Cole (51-45-56-101), Ryan Loveless (83-52-46-98) and Andrew Sweetland (34-57-38-95) round out the top five. The Blizzard play their home games at Glacier Arena in Mount Pearl. Of all the Atlantic Under 18 leagues, the Newfoundland and Labrador league is by far the most difficult to archive. If anybody can offer some missing info or correct any errors, it would be very much appreciated. Even the final standings prior to 2010 are hard to find.
East Coast Blizzard named 2020-21 NLU18MHL League Champions news • 2021-05-25
With a 7-1 victory in game 5 of the NLU18MHL final over the Tripen Osprey, the East Coast Blizzard laid claim to the title of 2020-21 NLU18MHL Champions!
Congrats to the Blizzard who roared back with 4 straight wins after the Osprey took the first game in the series. Travis Badcock of the Blizzard was named the playoff MVP.
The NLU18MHL tips our hat to the Osprey as well as to the Western Kings, Central Impact and Pinnacle Growlers for your dedication and persevance in what was a very challenging season on and off the ice. Wishing all teams the best in the off season, and looking forward to seeing you back on the ice in the fall.

PINNACLE GROWLERS
Team HistoryThe Pinnacle Growlers joined the league as an expansion franchise for the 2010-11 season. They were known as the St. John's Maple Leafs until 2018 (not to be confused with the former St. John's Maple Leafs franchise which had evolved into the St. John's Fog Devils / St. John's Privateers / East Coast Blizzard franchise). In 2018, they rebranded as the Pinnacle Growlers. Drawing from the greater St. John's player pool, the Growlers have become the most successful league franchise winning league championships in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2023. They have won the league playoff title in 6 of the last 8 seasons that a champion has been decided. Since 2011, the two St. John's area teams hold a draft of the St. John's area player pool. Franchise career scoring leaders are Kyle McGrath (91-65*-69*-134*); Regan Seymour (94-41-56-97) and Reegan Hiscock (88-56-35-91). The Growlers play their home games at the DF Barnes Arena (formerly the Feildian Gardens) in St. John's. Of all the Atlantic Under 18 leagues, the Newfoundland and Labrador league is by far the most difficult to archive. If anybody can offer some missing info or correct any errors, it would be very much appreciated. Even the final standings prior to 2010 are hard to find. For anybody who doesn't realize it, items or stories of interest have been added following the history of each U18 program, whether it be a first league championship, a recent championship, a franchise shift, or simply something that pops up in the search. Hopefully, those items of interest add a bit of colour to the history of each franchise.
PINNACLE GROWLERS ARE THE 2022 NL U18 MAJOR HOCKEY LEAGUE CHAMPIONS April 19, 2022
Grand Falls-Windsor, NL- The Pinnacle Growlers will be representing Hockey NL at the 2022 U18 Major Atlantic Championship being held in Paradise, NL this weekend from April 21-24, 2022. The Growlers topped off a dominant regular season (29-2-1) with a 4-1 victory over the Tri Pen Osprey to win the NLU18MHL Championship in 6 games.
Andy Knight found the back of the net twice in the final game, along with insurance markers from Nicholas Devereaux and Ronan Whitten helped secure the Growlers win.
Reegan Hiscock of the Growlers was awarded the Presidents Trophy for Top Play-off Performer. Hiscock led the play-offs in goals, with 12, and was tied for first in points, with 15.
