It's just more "chequebook hockey", which is designed to guarantee the organizer to not going to have to look for a real job. So many parents are terrified that if their kid misses this hockey school, that development camp, this skills session etc, that the neighbour's kid is going to develop faster. This could result in bumping their kid off the advanced Novice team, and miss out on having him seen by multiple scouts at age 8. This would jeopardize the NCAA dreams the parents have developed for the boy on his way to "The Show". So, multiple thousands are spent to have the kid end up on the third D pairing on the high school team. Less than 1% of children enrolled in minor hockey are ever compensated financially.

The issue isn't this type of event...the problem is this specific event provides absolutely nothing of value to the participants!! Testing?? EliteProspects membership??

The issue isn't this type of event...the problem is this specific event provides absolutely nothing of value to the participants!! Testing?? EliteProspects membership?? I think you are both right. What bothers me is that it will be a two tier event. There will be those who get put up at the best motels, get paid for their time, and have their travel paid for by the organizers and/or Bauer. The majority will need to pay their own travel and accommodations and give up a week of their vacations during the best part of the summer. The worst part is that the players will not only need to pay through the teeth a week before training camps go in - but because of their ages - the prospect group not yet drafted (2009) will need to be accompanied by a parent or chaperone. They are 14/15 year-olds. Fredericton is a beautiful city - but it isn't a tourist destination in early to mid-August. The poor guy with a job who is using up a vacation week to not only volunteer as a scout or team staff member while others get paid is nothing but a sucker footing the payroll of those who do get paid. Some people have been volunteer scouting for the love of the game for 20 years or more, and while he volunteers and pays his own way and accommodations - somebody who is only learning to scout gets wined and dined and has their expenses covered by Bauer. I'm sure that some/many will fall in line and be loyal to their MHL team staffs to prove their dedication - but those teams should put it out there right from the get-go that in no way are they expected to commit if it takes away from family vacation time or causes undue hardship. I mean - who can afford travel and three night's accommodations - plus meals at a restaurant three times a day for four days to volunteer? Even if they car pool and split room costs (and they will) - to know that others are filling their pockets and having their expenses covered can't sit well. It isn't like attending a draft or staying a night somewhere on your own dime. We're talking four days and three nights - plus travel times. This isn't like a simple Showcase or Coaching Symposium - it's basically the better part of a week's vacation spent in Fredericton during the hottest part of the summer - with little to no benefit to any of those volunteers other than having their MHL owners know they are over and above team players. . .
