Now being told that the Western Capitals organization will not be taking part at the MHL Summit.
Just a personal note - but I think the decision to take part or not is one that each individual organization needs to make for themselves.
At one point, I was leaning towards leading a boycott against the summit. Sometimes you take a stance on things - but I had a change of heart.
I don't want to go to that extreme. None of the organizers including the Fredericton group, Roger Shannon or any of the others I hear are involved has ever done anything to me. I have no personal agenda.
I also don't see it entirely as a money grab, because most of the players will attend some kind of camp over the summer - or look to get ice time somewhere before QMJHL and MHL training camps open.
The women's initiative also played into it for me. If part of it was going to see the women being paid and having things like meals and accommodations covered by Bauer or the organizers - I simply didn't think it would be right to have our MHL team staffs, scouts and so on attending at their own expense.
I'm now being led to believe that the women's initiative is no more - but we'll see. IMO - you can't have some paid - and others paying out of pocket to volunteer.
I think the summit itself is a combination of bad timing, too expensive and too close to training camps - but I'm not going to come out and boycott it or advise players and parents not to take part. If you can afford it and have the vacation time to spare - and if you believe it will help the player's development - why not?
As far as MHL staffs - nobody should be pressured to sacrifice the better part of a week in mid-August to grow the MHL. Let the MHL paid staff, the owners, governors, coaches and GM's and anybody else getting paid (possibly Elite Prospects and Neutral Zone personnel) look after things like that.
Also hoping our broadcasters, scorekeepers, social media people and other volunteers aren't led to believe they will miss out if they don't attend for any kind of "training."
